Fairphone 4—the repairable, sustainable smartphone—is coming to the US

Fairphone teams up with the developer of the /e/ Android fork to enable US sales.

@arstechnica I had no idea that software was the hold-up, I thought it was distribution and support. This article makes it sound as though the Fairphone isn't available with regular Android, but it is. My Fairphone 4 runs plain old Android 12 (promised to be upgraded to 13). No idea why that couldn't be sold in the US, where the OS is from?

@captainchaos @arstechnica

I recall that when I bought a US sim for my fairphone, the only carrier that could support any of its frequencies was AT&T and companies relying on their network.

@captainchaos @arstechnica
Yeah I was really dispappointed I couldn't find anywhere in the article that would get into why the Fairphone wasn't sold in the US up to this point - for customers willing to pay postage.
I always assumed it was legal liability, perhaps something dealing with patent warchests or maybe an unspoken requirement to include spyware. But I could've been wrong and either way it would be nice to see it explained in specifics.
@arstechnica ooh oooh ooh now waiting for it to hit asia.

@arstechnica take note. This is innovation
@arstechnica
Coming to the USA, not the rest of the countries in this space.
@arstechnica Does anybody know if it will work with Google Fi?

@mrjukes
Probably not. Running a de-Googled OS. Means no/fewer Google Services. You will have to use other carriers with the Fairphone 4 most likely.

I'm in the same boat. Pixel 6, Fi user. But I do like the idea of the Fairphone and the /e/ OS.
@arstechnica

@arstechnica Yay! I've had a Fairphone for about a year now and I love it.
@arstechnica neat! I know what my next work phone will be.
@arstechnica that’s awesome! It will be good to have another competitor in the market here.
@arstechnica
Currently using a Fairphone 4 in the United States to type this message. Glad to see that I won't have to pay for shipping from Europe if I need a spare part soon.
@arstechnica lack of headphone jack makes me very sad
Fairphone, if you're reading this, please bring it back
I don't care if it makes the phone less water resistant, give me my headphone jack back
@arstechnica The idea of a repairable, modular phone reminds me a bit of the #FrameworkLaptop.
@arstechnica ohmygodohmygodohmygod I NEED to get one holy shit
@arstechnica I’m so excited for this! Hopefully there’s plenty available when I need a new phone
@[email protected] This looks interesting. Will definitely be seriously considering this when it’s time to get a new phone.
@arstechnica It had been a while since I saw a news story that made me as excited as this one!
@arstechnica
I've used the Fairphone 4 as my "daily driver" for a year and a half now. And for several months more as a development platform. I've been very happy with it. Shoutout to @z3ntu for his great work on it, and to @calyxos and the whole @calyxinstitute for their excellent OS on it.
@dangillmor
@arstechnica ideally, I'd like to see only tracker-free apps available for this phone, though having those available along with standard (less-secure) Android fare would be an improvement.
@arstechnica oh oh wait! I already have one of those! Ummm…never mind…I thought you said FapPhone.
