@arstechnica I had no idea that software was the hold-up, I thought it was distribution and support. This article makes it sound as though the Fairphone isn't available with regular Android, but it is. My Fairphone 4 runs plain old Android 12 (promised to be upgraded to 13). No idea why that couldn't be sold in the US, where the OS is from?

I recall that when I bought a US sim for my fairphone, the only carrier that could support any of its frequencies was AT&T and companies relying on their network.

Yeah I was really dispappointed I couldn't find anywhere in the article that would get into why the Fairphone wasn't sold in the US up to this point - for customers willing to pay postage.
I always assumed it was legal liability, perhaps something dealing with patent warchests or maybe an unspoken requirement to include spyware. But I could've been wrong and either way it would be nice to see it explained in specifics.
