A very helpful update from Twitter.
@emptywheel Interesting that “customers” (advertisers) are clearly distinguished from “people using the platform.”
@emptywheel @JamesGleick So Twitter/Musk doesn’t consider the Twitter Blue subscribers paying $8/month customers.
@david1 @emptywheel @JamesGleick those folks are products who are paying to be the product

@JamesGleick @emptywheel "Very important people who have given us money, to the left, thank you! Please enjoy the complimentary semi-working platform!

Unwashed heathens!?!? To the right, and don't give me any lip!"

@JamesGleick @emptywheel
Indeed!

Maybe also of interest is what was not said:
* Occurred after a magnificent self-DDoS,
* Which occurred after blocking public access,
* Which coincided with a reported last minute hosting migration scramble,
* Reportedly in anticipation of payment delinquency

That's some deep commitment to something or other!

@JamesGleick @emptywheel This is a useful distinction, and helps you frame your interactions with the company.

This is like Ticketmaster, which clearly distinguishes Fans from Clients. Fan Experience is a different group from Client Experience.

@JamesGleick @emptywheel
So the customer of your customer is me?
@JamesGleick @emptywheel Because to Twitter, we are the product.
