For new Mastodon users, you likely aren't seeing art and photos fully. Most instances crop images by default, and if you don't want to have to click on images to see them fully, you need to turn off the setting.

Turning off the setting makes the Mastodon experience better.

Go to your settings. Find Post Layout. Uncheck the box next to "Crop images in non-expanded posts to 16x9." Enjoy art and photos fully.

@bryanhansel thanks!!! So much better already.
@bryanhansel
Thank you! Cropped images have been bugging me!
@bryanhansel Done. Thanks. After I Saved the change, I had to log out and log back in to update my feed appearance. Nice to see your shots in full glory.
@bryanhansel Can you get Gifs to play without clicking on them?

@BengalBrian yep. Find the

ANIMATIONS AND ACCESSIBILITY

Auto-play animated GIFs

Checkbox

@bryanhansel Option is on, but it doesn't work.
@BengalBrian best to ask your admin to look into it. It could also be the app. If it's the app, report it as a bug or feature request.
@bryanhansel Dunno how to ask Admin. I have just done an update on Playstore, so using current version.
@BengalBrian are you using the official Android app? It kinda sucks. I just let Chrome install the Web version as an app, and it's much better than the official Android app. There are other full featured apps available as well. I've been meaning to try Fedilab.
@bryanhansel Yeah... Am flipping between the Android App and Tusky.
@BengalBrian try installing Mastodon as an app from your Chrome web browser. That might fix the issue for you.
@bryanhansel I don't like downloading Apps from Chrome due to security risks.
@BengalBrian it basically just creates a single chrome tab of Mastodon that acts like an app.
@bryanhansel cheers for your help bro. I will figure it all out. Still getting used to the platform. Will take a bit of time to find all my Twitter people.
@BengalBrian @bryanhansel I heard Tusky was good for hash tags ? The official Android app does seem a bit meh
@bryanhansel How did I miss this before?! Thank you!
@bryanhansel I didn't know this and I've been here for a minute... thank you
@bryanhansel @britt On iOS there are still a few apps that haven’t adapted to this option and still forcefully crop despite settings on the server side. Thankfully there are so many others that don’t!
@bryanhansel
Oh my goodness, this is SO HELPFUL! Thank you for this. 😭💖
@bryanhansel I don't see that option. I use Android.
@DavidSteele it might depend on the app you use. For Android, it's best to turn the website into an app via Chrome.
@bryanhansel Cheers. I'll give that a go.
@bryanhansel Sorted. Thanks for that. Still getting used to Mastodon.
@bryanhansel This is one of those "hidden" settings that a Mastodon newbie, or even an experienced user, wouldn't know about. Thank you for the post.
@bryanhansel I didn't know this preference existed and it's been my biggest gripe with the Masto UI for the longest time
@bryanhansel uh, that seems like a terrible default setting. Cropped images are such a pain for posting art.
Seems like my instance doesn't crop.
@bryanhansel
I had no idea. Setting changed, thanks!
@bryanhansel is there a better way to make them load on shitty connections? Twitter seems to do it way better, especially on desktop
@DrJankenstein not that I know of. Mastodon isn't stellar when it comes to handling images.

@bryanhansel one of these days, the FOSS community will care about graphics.

it'll probably be the day after they start caring about UI/UX

@DrJankenstein there's a bug tracker/feature request for better image handling. Hopefully, they tackle it.

Images Crap? Get Them Cropped

@bryanhansel Well I've been looking in the Tusky account preferences and in my Android tablet settings and can't find what you are referring to. Is it me? It probably is 😄
@Beulah it's the app. Not all apps will support the feature. I don't use Tusky, so I'm not sure what it supports. On Android, I install the website as an app via Chrome
@bryanhansel OK thanks. Means absolutely zilch to me as don't really understand all this technology not being a 12 yr old! Maybe I'll figure it out one day. I installed the Mastodon app originally but it was clunky and slow and people were recommending Tusky as much better so installed that and it is. I can live with the photos as they are. Thanks for trying to explain.

@bryanhansel

Thanks! Found this in Fedilab under Settings->Timelines->"Fit preview images".

@lilithsaintcrow

@bryanhansel Ahhh, much better, thanks. That's a dumb default.
@bryanhansel As someone who hates cropped images but is also too lazy to click on most cropped images, this will be a game changer.
@bryanhansel
Does this setting exist in Tusky? I don't see it.
@zaivala Tusky doesn't support it
@bryanhansel
Yes I understood that from the previous post of this comment. I was just updating it because I noticed there is a misspelling.
