#linux

@itsfoss to #Ubuntu actually.

Because support is longer and the release cycle is more predictable.

But yes, what RedHat has done I think will impact the trust in all Linux companies

@metallcorn @itsfoss nah it'd be Debian, because who really wants to use the shitty Ubuntu snaps?

@ibeardslee @itsfoss No one is forcing you to use them.

But among other things, they are really handy on the server. For the third year my personal Nextcloud works this way and I have no problems

@metallcorn @ibeardslee @itsfoss They are in fact forcing you to use them, what about what happened to Firefox on Ubuntu? 🙂

@dieTasse @ibeardslee @itsfoss

The same goes for the Telegram Desktop client.
Do I see a problem with it? - No.

Yes, the behavior of HOW they were implemented raises questions. But I've installed them in Snap before.

Firefox, Telegram, Mailspring work fine in snap and are easy to update.

What disadvantages should I get for myself?

I also have a lot of flatpak apps installed. And honestly for the desktop Flatpack is a lot more convenient than Snap. But when I was deploying Nextcloud on my server snap saved me a couple hours of my life )

@metallcorn @ibeardslee @itsfoss it may be ok for you but it was always slow and janky for me. I am not saying snap has no place in Linux (your example is good) i am just pointing out how it is forced on the Ubuntu users.
@metallcorn @dieTasse @ibeardslee @itsfoss as far as I know Fedora never added .rpms that were just wrappers to install Flatpaks
@metallcorn
They're handy for some things but I don't like the philosophy behind Snaps, I don't like that the backend is not open source, I don't like that Ubuntu is blocking flathub and I don't like the way they force them on you.
@ibeardslee @itsfoss
@metallcorn @ibeardslee @itsfoss Ubuntu does, in fact, force people to use Snaps.
@metallcorn @itsfoss I'd say it reaffirms what we already know: profit-driven companies are not your friend. They didn't do what they did because they are a Linux company, they did it because they are profit-driven and owned by a profit-driven organisation.
@itsfoss @geerlingguy you might want to see this 🙂
@itsfoss you know, for a fact, that it is not a great place to work, if it has that printed out.

@itsfoss Install Gentoo!!

(or maybe arch since arch-install exists)

@ashiisbest @itsfoss you all can install whatever you want, sweeties 😊
