I love all of the new capitalist innovations like:

* Submarines that implode
* Computers that lie
* Movies no one can watch, for tax reasons

@Cryptika * states you can't do work in, for tax reasons

My wife is not allowed to go to New York for ANYTHING that is even tangentially work related. If she does she'll have to pay state income tax in 2 states because her employer is based there but we live in VT. Even if she just spends an hour doing work things in NY.

@masukomi @Cryptika It's weird how states with income tax don't have sensible exceptions for these situations. Like, you have to work there more than X days a year to trigger a tax liability.

Such strict rules hurt more than they help because it reduces travel to the state where people spend money.

@zorinlynx @Cryptika in general i believe they do. When the pandemic hit, NYC lost significant numbers of bodies as they moved away and started working remotely. These were predominantly knowledge workers and thus the ones who paid more income tax, but they weren’t living in NY anymore so they weren’t taxable.

So NY changed the rules.

1/2?

@zorinlynx @Cryptika NY redefined how they recognize where a co is based. Mongo DB, for example isn’t legally based in NY but enough of its C-levels live there that it counts under the new rules. They also redefined what constitutes working “enough” time in NY to count for tax purposes as ANY time.

There are a couple exceptions but intentionally not ones individual remote workers can leverage.

So, it USED to be reasonable, but then NY got greedy and put its finger on the metaphorical scale

@Cryptika You know I''m starting to get the feeling that this capitalism malarky just aint all that good.
@Cryptika
* Supreme Court justices as investments.
@Cryptika The tax write-off IP really ought to be archived and placed in the public domain!
@Cryptika Isn’t that a line from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, “He’s spending a year dead for tax reasons”?
@Cryptika Products that you pay full price for but don't actually own and aren't allowed to fix yourself.
@Spoileralert @Cryptika products you pay for in full like heated seats in cars, yet the car company wants you to subscribe to on a yearly basis.
@Cryptika ...most efficient way to distribute goods and services! Didja know Mike Babcock got fired from coaching the Leafs and still got paid $6m for the next three years?
@Cryptika you know, when you put it like that, what's not to love?
@Cryptika houses that no one can live in....because profits

@Cryptika

* Tunnel full of taxis you share with four other people for some reason

@Cryptika @SuperTwaddle Or digital books, music, TV shows and movies that you “buy” online but don’t actually own because the seller can take them away from you at any time in the future (hi, Amazon!).
@Cryptika damn coputers be bisexual eating hot chip
@Cryptika I think you may be forgetting expensive digital images that give you exclusive access to a "club", and digital currency that you can pay them cash for, but then are supposed to be held indefinitely while you wait to profit.
