You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.

Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.

 On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot

 On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

@feditips i'm kind of new to this, are there web/chromeOS/desktop clients?
@alcryptoy @feditips There is the advanced web interface (under settings) in the web app / page which gives columns and a whole bunch of other bits :-)
@nickbearman Ah thanks, that's the kind of things I was looking for! A lot better :)
@alcryptoy You're welcome! I had to have it pointed out to me when I joined :-) Enjoy Mastodon!

@alcryptoy @feditips most of the alternative desktop experiences seem to be web apps like https://elk.zone/

Though I think @ivory might have a desktop app if you're on Mac

Elk

A nimble Mastodon web client

Elk

@dwgill @alcryptoy @ivory

Yeah, Elk is a good alternative web interface if you don't like the official one.

@feditips @dwgill @alcryptoy @ivory Also great for people coming from Twitter like me. I find Twitter's UI to be simpler and more concise than even Mastodon's web client.

Side note: I prefer web apps(even more for PWAs) for these kind of things

@feditips @dwgill there's also @phanpy which provides quite opinionated, but nice experience https://phanpy.social/

@alcryptoy @ivory

Phanpy

Minimalistic opinionated Mastodon web client

@brawaru Wow! That's a nice simple interface.
@PreachCobbler mhm! I especially like how it makes use of right click on desktop, it's so convenient
@brawaru Threading and the boost carousel are genius. Keyboard shortcuts too!
@dwgill Thanks! I've tried it, doesn't look like what i wanted exactly, but it had a smooth ui.

@alcryptoy

The desktop website interface is really good, and has two different modes.

By default it has a single-column mode, but you can switch it to a Tweetdeck-style multicolumn mode too.

More info on switching it to advanced at https://fedi.tips/how-to-activate-mastodons-tweetdeck-style-advanced-web-interface/

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@feditips Thanks a lot! That what i was looking for! Switching to multicolumn is perfect. :)
@feditips @alcryptoy see also phanpy.social as a web app. The main mastodon app is very leaky and runs out of memory and gets slow if you leave it open. Elk and phanpy are bother better at that,and have smoother ui.
@KevinMarks Ah thanks, i'll keep an eye on it!
@alcryptoy @KevinMarks I use Elk and it is very Twitter-like. For an alpha it is incredibly functional. I had not heard of Phanpy but I will check it out!
@feditips @alcryptoy the tweet deck column format was honestly the initial draw for me. I had my Twitter highly curated and got around the Algo by having those highly curated columns

@alcryptoy @feditips

I just log straight into the website (wandering(.)shop) with Firefox - it's just another tab and works a treat. (And yes, I have all four columns showing.)

Even on my phone I don't use an app - just log in from the website.

@Her_Doing I've tried the website and the PWA on Android, but it wasn't my thing. I'm used to Tusky (because it looks like Twitter, and i'm quite used to it for now)

@alcryptoy

I'm glad you found something that works for you! 😃 I only mentioned it because we are so used to thinking everything has to be an app - nope, not necessarily! 😄

@Her_Doing Haha you're right! And there are lot of benefits to not go through an app, ofc! However, it's a bubbling universe, so i might change sooner than i think. 👀
@alcryptoy @feditips I use @elk which is awesome. Even for mutiaccount.
@alcryptoy @feditips if you're on Linux, give Whalebird a try! It's a flatpak app with a pretty good interface and support for desktop notifications too.
@southernwolf @feditips Oh! Good to know, I'm not on Linux yet, but will be in a few month, so I save your message, thanks!
‎Tusker

App Store
@feditips You forgot the best Android app: Moshidon.

@CityHoosier

It's still pretty experimental isn't it?

@feditips I would say it's more stable now and less experimental. It's added a lot of great features, and slowed down releases by quite a bit. It now has a nightly build for more experimental releases. It's now more similar to Megalodon or Tusky in release schedule and feature adding.
@feditips The android apps have cooler names.
@feditips I am using tusky at the moment - this might be really cheeky to ask, but are there pros and cons to each one? Not knowing entirely what is available from mastodon means that I'm not sure which of the apps is really delivering the best functionality or even if it's what I'm looking for. I just took the first recommendation I was given so I might be missing out on lots of stuff I didn't even know existed.

@shanti

I just did a review of Tusky listing pros and cons 😁

https://fedi.tips/tusky-for-android/

Haven't done reviews for other Android apps yet, but will try to gradually do so.

@shanti @feditips +1 would be very nice to have such an overview

@ahoi @shanti

I'm trying to gradually do brief reviews of third party apps, I've only done three so far though:

Tusky for Android
https://fedi.tips/tusky-for-android/

Toot! for iOS
https://fedi.tips/toot-for-iphone-ipad/

Ice Cubes for iOS

I'll try to add more.

@feditips @ahoi have you any idea how I switch off email notifications? If this gets busy my updates inbox will be overrun 😂

@shanti @ahoi

Yes! If you log in through your server's website, then go to Preferences > Notifications, untick the boxes and click "Save Changes".

If you're using the website through a phone, you may need to click ☰ to see the Notifications option in Preferences.

@feditips @ahoi thank you, I was searching through the tusky app trying to find it everywhere and I couldn't find anything, you are a legend, thanks again!

@shanti

Great!

Generally, if a setting is missing in an app, the website will have it. The website has pretty much everything first.

@feditips @shanti Thanks a lot. I‘ll have a look

@ahoi @shanti @feditips

What I would find even nicer is a specific recommendation, like "If you are new to Mastodon, and want a place to start, right now is I'd suggest X."

Add all the caveats you want, but for most people the problem with Mastodon is too many choices. Your informed opinion is more valuable than a list of options.

@jztusk @ahoi @shanti

If you just want one recommendation for Android, try Tusky. It should have been the official app IMHO, it was around years before the official one.

@feditips @ahoi @shanti

A thousand thanks. Just installed it and will test drive it after lunch.

(The app store's #1 "Recommend for You" ad was truth.social. 😄 )

@shanti
I switched from tusky when I was looking for a way to browse other instances while logged in and found that fedilab allows you to add other activity pub feeds like mastodon instances and pixelfed (although I can't pull pixelfed timelines for some reason)
@feditips
@shanti @feditips Assuming you're on a Mastodon instance, any client with an elephant reference in its name is a pretty safe bet, because Mastodon compatability is most likely the target.

In my case, however, I'm running an Akkoma instance, which of course, is Mastodon compatible, so I'm typing this on my favourite Mastodon client (Tusky), but that means some of the features of my instance (Markdown for example) are not available to me here.
@feditips thanks for the tip! Will test  compatible ones.
@feditips Android app got substantial update recently, though. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/07/mastodon-for-android-update/
Mastodon for Android update

Today, Mastodon for Android has received a complete Material You redesign. We left no stone unturned — tab bars, settings, composing — everything is refreshed and reflects your color palette.

Mastodon Blog

@jbaert

True, but still some way to catch up. No hashtag following for example :/

@feditips @jbaert Does it do threaded replies yet?

@hughster @jbaert

Do you mean with clear thread markings?

@feditips @jbaert Yes, and also with the comments. The web UI added them a couple of months ago I think?

@hughster @jbaert

The official web UI's pre-release has them but it hasn't gone to release yet. Some servers use pre-release version of Mastodon, so that may be why you see these threads.

Third party apps can choose how they display threads themselves, for example Toot! for iOS has had London Underground style thread maps for many years now.

@feditips Tuba is also great on GNOME
