As someone who fully divested from twitter despite being reliant on it early in 2023 I'm here to tell you that you can, in fact, just not use twitter. You can go all in on mastodon. In fact, it'll probably make mastodon work better for you if you do

"What about cool people that are only on Twitter?"

If they were truly cool they wouldn't be *only* on Twitter

@eniko "we're on Facebook too" ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
@nincodedo @eniko I'm only using it because family and how prevalent it is in Hungary.
@nincodedo okay facebook and linkedin don't count as alternatives >_>
@eniko I'd like to point out that by forcing people to sign in to see any content at all, they've effectively made themselves more like Pinterest, the least cool social media site in a world where Facebook exists.
@eniko we love them though. Good to build bridges between this site and Babylon social media

@eniko

if they were cool they would have left twatter already ...

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

@eniko I absolutely agree. I feel like the writing has been on the wall for so long now that it's crazy if you haven't at least slightly divested yourself from Twitter by now. Even businesses should have been looking into diversifying their social media presence!
@eoinoneillPDX a lot of people are gonna have a problem that they wouldn't have had if they had so much as phoned in using other sites for the past 8 months :/
@eniko You're right. I do feel bad for them in that case. It also doesn't help that this site becomes a lot better once you have a decent pool of people you're following (since there's no algorithmic recommendations.)
@eniko mmm like 99% of who I follow just arenโ€™t here though :(
@gamingonlinux then they're not cool enough to worry about ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธโ€‹
@eniko mmm life and business is just not so simple as that
@gamingonlinux @eniko However, Twitter itself coming up with yet another way to force the issue may make it simpler. Likeโ€ฆ the website itself deciding to push people out of using it. So likeโ€ฆ where are the people currently on twitter going to go? A lot of people want Bluesky but itโ€™s still invite-only, and unclear if it has a web frontend. A fediverse instance is the next most common-sense option. Or they can justโ€ฆ stop posting. Which may be even better, depending on circumstances, lol.
@gamingonlinux @eniko follow new people then. theres hundreds of thousands of people on the fediverse who are posting.
@gamingonlinux @eniko I lucked out and was already entirely off twitter by the time they decided to flip the switch from blow (investor money) to suck (money in for investor.) It'd probably be best for each developer to just have their own bloody RSS feed for the news sites to follow for their press releases and information.

@eniko hey now the new catastrophe is reddit and its content going away.

And soon Youtube videos too (if that purge didn't start already).

@eniko i did that for six months + went back for breaking news. it was a tradeoff.

today looks like a real before + after line, tho. afaict, the rate limiting began yesterday + then cascaded into full-on breakage this morning.

i'm kinda stunned at the incompetence he's showing.

@jbminn @eniko

He doesn't seem like he is on a learning curve. Just an enshittification curve.

I'm getting good breaking news here, IMO. I still go to the source for real articles, but I'm getting enough news here. If only they weren't so often paywalled (had same prob on the bird).

@eniko i'm loving it on the fedi! it's been a good place to find people like me and stuff i like
@eniko Still can't follow people from mastodon.social and every attempt (as GitHub Issues) is blocked. Yeah no, I just hope Blue Sky is not shit
@eniko I completely left Reddit for KBin, might also get into some other Fediverse stuff.
@eniko Couldn't have said it better myself!
@eniko honestly I can't wait for twitter to actually die for good so more poeple are forced onto mastodon.

@eniko

same....the first couple weeks were hard and I had the urge to check Twitter a lot, but I dealt with that by uninstalling the app on my phone so the only way I could check it was to log on via the website which was unpleasant and annoying enough to break the habit. At some point I stopped thinking about it alltogether.

I had mostly stopped posting there a while before I left though and didn't post anything at all there after I decided to leave, so there was really nothing drawing me back once I broke the physical habit of checking the Twitter app on my phone.

@eniko yup. engagement goes up for me tenfold. I just need to, you know, be on here more.
@bryy uninstall twitter from your phone so you can only use it on laptop/desktop
@eniko welcome and enjoy your stay... it is nice here and you can block people you don't wanna see in better ways here
@eniko You're right. I even made a Google Keep note of the people I follow/my Twitter followers alternate accounts which I last edited in December. The thing that made me stop from fully investing my time on here is that I couldn't see a lot of black disabled people on here like there is on Twitter.
@eniko I recently found about Mastodon, but so far the place is quite calm, and I like that.  Yeah.. It's sad that the people I follow aren't here, but maybe one day ๐Ÿ‘€

@eniko

YES! A thousand times thisโ€ฆ
If you want to find a home here, make a home here. Build a new community here. Make new friends here. Twitter isnโ€™t going to get better; recent history has shown that Musk is intent on destruction. Why wait?

@eniko bingo. Same. Wrote a post about it, I was on the bird for 10 years. I just quit and it was a little weird but not devastating. SO much better here.
@eniko Actually. I thought there was no way I could work without twitter. I still miss some folks from there, but I enjoy fedi much more. It serves the marginalized folks like Twitter never could
