if you’re reinstalling Windows 98 today because of its 25th birthday and need something to listen to, I’ve got great news
@MichaelKlamerus and they went out of business why? 🤔

@felsqualle @mattwells @MichaelKlamerus this just made me unlock a core memory. Thank you for that link!
@felsqualle @mattwells @MichaelKlamerus OMG YES I do remember that! And I also remember asking: “So… is this… the future, now?”
@MichaelKlamerus Is there a rip of this somewhere?

@SQHistorian not that I know of but it seems like it’s a pretty straightforward compilation?

@mattwells @MichaelKlamerus I don't know what I was expecting, but this wasn't it.
@mattwells @MichaelKlamerus I think I was expecting more the sort of limp-dick soft rock you'd hear in a mid-90s supermarket.
@SQHistorian @MichaelKlamerus yeah it's basically Music to Shop at Barnes & Noble By.
@mattwells @MichaelKlamerus Hahahaha... There should be a whole series of these.
@SQHistorian @mattwells be the change you wish to see in the world
@MichaelKlamerus @mattwells I'm already doing a 4x record of The 7th Guest music. I've got my hands full in the music department. 😅
@MichaelKlamerus It's just a one track CD of 'Yakety Sax' and you're supposed to listen to it on repeat?
@MichaelKlamerus Does this include a radically slowed down Vapourwave "Start me Up" remix?
@MichaelKlamerus @cherdt i fee like you need to see this
@nim @MichaelKlamerus a lot of hallmarks of 1998 graphic design (Photoshop 5 era) there. Drop shadows. Gradient fade. They could have done that with Photoshop 4, but it would have been a lot more work.
@MichaelKlamerus Why would I install Win98? It was obsolete before it was even released. Lol
@Gant696 @MichaelKlamerus Lots of folks kept ‘98 around because of compatibility for gaming. XP didn’t handle some of ‘98 (and earlier) era games very well because the kernel was a bit different.
@raddude12 A bit? It was a completely different kernel. My point was that DOS was always obsolete to UNIX. Look at Sun.
@Gant696 I dunno. Windows 98 was on a fuck of a lot more machines than UNIX ever was. It may have been inferior to UNIX, but to call it obsolete is silly.
@MichaelKlamerus someone has already recompiled this CD on Spotify if you wanna listen. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7pkSQWXFBUzTnHAHyTseSp?si=v0vkzwP3RpmoHmLvHL-W8A

@MichaelKlamerus : Does it come on 98 LP records, one for each floppy?
@MichaelKlamerus Borders... I remember when the one near my house closed and was replaced by a Modell's... Which closed less than 5 years later. The store front is still empty to this day...
@MichaelKlamerus this has "lo-fi beats to chill and study to" vibes and im here for it
@MichaelKlamerus wrong version, but song stuck in my head https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOwQKWiRJAA

@MichaelKlamerus next up, the dozen or so songs that came with the first version of iTunes. I remember they included Monday by Wilco, Collide by k d lang… couple others from various genres
@MichaelKlamerus This is amazing. And it’s a Borders album apparently.
@MichaelKlamerus @satanskrapfen Do you also have a link for that or just great news?

@f2k1de @satanskrapfen Someone made a link containing all the tracks for it on Youtube. There's a Spotify playlist as well. It's just a compilation album

@MichaelKlamerus actually a pretty good album. Can’t go wrong with the ‘Velvet Fog’.

@MichaelKlamerus Oh look, it's the worst mouse ever.

When some designer looked at the concept of ergonomics and went "to hell with that!"

@MichaelKlamerus Say about Windows 98 what you want, it was better than both it's immediate predecessor and it's immediate successor.

@MichaelKlamerus this great dog walking music.

Though, regarding Win98, I think on my (oldest and first computer) IBM ThinkPad 600, I'll keep its Windows ME installation.

@MichaelKlamerus

Can't I just have that one track that Win XP had, as it was installing itself, instead?
