@GottaLaff Why can't the damn plugs be standardized now before this goes any further?
@GiddingsMJ I wish I knew. I've been driving an electric car since 2015 and it pisses me off when I see rows and rows of Tesla chargers at public stops, but nothing for the rest of us.
@GottaLaff Maybe we should ask Pete Buttigieg. You have any contacts with him??
@GiddingsMJ @GottaLaff This is another step toward standardization. Ford, GM, and Rivian have also committed to NACS.
@vorsos @GottaLaff OK. So, NACS is the Tesla plug. Are there more existing Tesla charging stations already? Is that why they are going that direction?

@GiddingsMJ Yes. The US has 50,000 NACS superchargers (plus thousands of slower ‘destination’ chargers at grocery stores and such).
The newer competing charge plug, CSS 1, is shared by several startups (each with their own payment app) but are typically slow and often broken.

So having to pick what works best for the most people right now, and will continue to for the foreseeable future, means NACS.

@vorsos @GottaLaff Thanks so much for that information. It makes more sense now.
@GiddingsMJ Glad to help! I’m normally wary of letting a single company set a categorical standard, but in this case we have seen traditional automakers and standards bodies fail to make a superior alternative.
@vorsos Are there adapters for cars with older plugs?
@GiddingsMJ Yes, CSS 1 to NACS adapters are around. You may need the Tesla app until your manufacturer pushes a software update to let your vehicle do the talking (and billing).
@GottaLaff I wish they’d just make them all use a standard plug that fits every electric vehicle. 🤦🏼
@GottaLaff Of all the Orwellian bullshit the right wing propaganda machine has accomplished, “free market capitalism” = government picking winners and losers is one of the strangest.
@GottaLaff
I was outraged when a woman pulled into 1 of 2 charging stations at Safeway. She was driving a beater. Not EV. I almost said something to her but was in my car pulling out. The parking lot was not full. She could have parked 10 feet away. Lazy ass.
