20 years jail for rescuing 1000 low income migrants who were forced to put their lives at risk.

Expanded search for rescuing a few billionaires who chose to put their lives at risk.

Criminalizing poverty and excusing opulence.

Smh. We don’t have to live like this.

@QasimRashid The Rich can 🖕🖕🖕🖕!!
@unhook2048 @QasimRashid meanwhile elon and zuck will punch each other.
@meowoem @QasimRashid you mean Elon will get slapped around, he's not showing. He's just surrounded by the yes people driving him further away from humanity. A fat man over 50 vs a trained Martial Arts practitioner who's actually won a few comps... Also not a fan of his but just no.
@QasimRashid maybe she could beat the case if she says one of those refugees had $400million.

@QasimRashid

Whoa, whoa a minute. Isn't Article 11 of the mariners code to assist those at sea?

When did that become not a thing?

The allies and Germans picked up enemy survivors during battles. It was a war crime to not provide assistance.

Innocent immigrants aren't afforded the same humanitarian consideration by Germany today?

@VHasch @QasimRashid I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure it was the Italian government who wanted to pit her to trial and I think the charges have been dropped in 2019.

@QasimRashid

And is there a go fund me page for her lawyers so she can defend herself from.tgos gross injustice. Maybe the Pulitzer nominating committee needs to step up.

@QasimRashid
Absolutely agree. "Something's rotten in the state of Denmark" .... human values, what matters most to whom and why...

@QasimRashid If there's no profit to be acquired through the act of caring, companies wont.

This is just one of many ways that Citizen's United has changed the way our country and even the world functions. Capitalism was already driving corps towards an unquenchable greed in the name of the shareholder. But now that they've been given personhood and money is a form of free speech, the toxicity of their motivations has become brazenly clear.

Immigrants aren't seen as profitable, so who cares?

@BusAlderaan @QasimRashid

Some US Americans really seem to assume that everything in the world is about the USA or influenced by the USA, which is really weird.

Sea rescues in the Mediterranean Sea / Captains being prosecuted in European countries have nothing to do with the US Supreme Court and its decisions like "Citizens United".

@QasimRashid
I looked up the woman you mentioned and it pains me to see her and others having to endure such a travesty for *helping* people in desperate need. 😖

I'm very intimately acquainted with people like her and immigrants who have been rescued from dire circumstances. It's not even something I'm comfortable speaking about here because of fear of reprisal... and that should never be... never ever ever...

Goodness this can all hurt so much. 💔

I have the AP News app on my phone, which I've always appreciated for the headline news... but every ding about this submarine made my skin crawl. I'm genuinely and truly sorry for the loss of life. There's nothing worse. But... my heart continues to break over how privileged lives are valued so much more than the rest. 😭

People matter.
Life matters.
Humanity matters.
*Not* just for the ones who are "in."

For those interest, here's one of the articles about the woman:

Female German boat captain faces up to 20 years in jail for rescuing 'drowning' migrants

A German boat captain could face 20 years in an Italian prison after she rescued more than 1,000 people from “drowning in the Mediterranean”.

I don't know a petition like this will have the desired effect, but with 480k of 500k signatures, it seems only appropriate to sign and share.

The man is an absolute hero
@QasimRashid Well … ah … um … er … point?
@QasimRashid  “You have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.”
@QasimRashid The EU does not cover itself with glory when it comes to migrants. The US doesn't win any prizes, either, but at least the Coast Guard tries to rescue anyone who gets in trouble at sea.
@QasimRashid my tax dollars paid for those searches.
@QasimRashid Too many billionaires, not enough submarines
@QasimRashid 20 years for the destruction of our continent is quite a mild punishment.
@QasimRashid you have to be truly soulless if you punish someone for LITERALLY SAVING LIVES
@QasimRashid There is a difference between migrant rescue and human trafficking. Assisting people to illegally cross borders is human trafficking. Picking drowning people from the sea is migrant rescue. You don't need to misrepresent facts to make the legitimate point that classism is a big problem.

@QasimRashid

The irony of this is fully unacceptable… but seems to say it all on the current state of ethics and empathy… disgusting in fact…

Same goes for the coverage of the 500 migrants who drowned in reach of the Greek coast… for God‘s sake, have pitty…

@QasimRashid And the responses from the usual Fascists claiming Refugees are "Illegal trafficing" because they were born without hearts, and also literally don't understand what a refugee is.
@WhyNotZoidberg @QasimRashid my poor heart bleeds for real refugees from the war nearby. Not for those clowns from Kurdistan who came to take their rooms. Is there problems in Kurdistan, they have oil revenues to repay Ukraine's IMF debt in 3 years. They should raise their fisting, and demand Barzani share some money!! The EU have no oil but they now have to care for poor economic state of oil rich Iraq or something?
@QasimRashid Yes we do. We’re morons by design. (Or so it seems.)
@QasimRashid that's the story of Salvini who really promised to save the country from "bad evil migrants" and here that German captain comes. And she then gets accused of colluding with smugglers. Far right Salvini who as we know once been fan of Putin

German boat captain faces prison for migrant rescues

Pia Klemp stands accused of aiding illegal immigration after she saved people from drowning in the Mediterranean. The Bonn native has accused Italian authorities of organizing "a show trial."

Deutsche Welle
@QasimRashid We ought to bring back the guillotine into fashion
@QasimRashid doesn’t the law of the sea require assisting persons in distress when able?
