I understand that visionOS has multitasking, I just don't understand at all how it works. Apps, even when closed, remain open in the background, playing music, and there's seemingly no multitasking screen you can access in the sim to see what's there or to force-quit it. I'm not sure whether Apple just hasn't written one yet, or it relies on some gestures unavailable to the simulator. You can even ‘Hide Others’ to hide apps, but how you bring them back where they were, I have no idea
I should add that when you choose an icon from the home screen, all of the app's hidden/cached windows respawn right in front of you. Maybe the idea is to not have a multitasking UI at all? But that seems spatially destructive, especially if you've placed windows in specific locations around your room/house
@stroughtonsmith I love the idea of leaving task-specific windows in places for that task, and I can also 100% see myself “... ok so where did I put that window again?”
@adamwulf @stroughtonsmith “Argh, left Music.app in the bathroom again”.
@Sonikku @adamwulf @stroughtonsmith this is why they have the backtrack on the Apple Watch
@Sonikku @adamwulf @stroughtonsmith @chucker “Excuse me, sir, could you quickly let me in? I used to live here six months ago and forgot my GarageBand window in the living room.”
@adamwulf @stroughtonsmith would a visionOS Mission Control not move windows but rather show you AirTags-like arrows that point to where they are? 🤔
@chucker @adamwulf @stroughtonsmith Pulling out the Find My app to remember which Starbucks has that comfy booth where I left that Keynote window I was working on
@stroughtonsmith I mean, we saw what Stage Manager did last year so…
@stroughtonsmith so we are going to have to wander around the house trying to find where we left Apple Music 😂
@stroughtonsmith Maybe they’re all placed right behind you, like, literally at the back of your mind? 🙃
@stroughtonsmith I’m guessing stage manager was designed for, and will ultimately be implemented in VisionOS.
@rishio from what I've seen, visionOS takes absolutely no inspiration from Stage Manager, in function or in API 😅
@stroughtonsmith That’s interesting to know. Look forward to what else you dig up. I’ve been really curious how window managment would work in VisionOS. I guess they really don’t need it in Version 1.0 - but eventually it’s got to have an elegant way to have dozens of app windows open at the same time.
@stroughtonsmith Real world metaphors have already been tried by the likes of General Magic, Microsoft Bob, and others. Ultimately, the UI needs to be efficient and not a metaphor to how things are done in the real world. Leaving apps in different physical spaces is not going to work for those wanting to use this to get things done.
@rishio @stroughtonsmith Windows and volumes in the shared space are placed relative to the user not relative to the world. You press and hold the digital crown to recenter the windows to your current location.
@stroughtonsmith thanks for sharing the journey with us so openly!
@stroughtonsmith I’m not sure what it means in terms of running status but I found there’s a little close button next to the “home indicator” on the right that will presumably kill the app. Maybe how iPadOS’s close window works?
@cwagdev it doesn't kill the app, it just closes the window. The app can stay running, playing music, whatever
