Usually I tell people I study Kuiper Belt Objects, because that name is more easily recognized by the general public. But today I have learned that I can make *Those People* cringe just by saying the more proper name.

So, I study Trans-Neptunian Objects.

@sundogplanets They probably don't wonder whether that means that Neptune is transitioning to a more distributed existence. 🤪

@dcbaok

Have you looked at the etymology and who uses that word?

https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/based/

There's plenty of "definitions" which elide over those points.

@sundogplanets

based

Based is a slang term that originally meant to be addicted to crack cocaine (or acting like you were), but was reclaimed by rapper Lil B for being yourself and not caring what others think of you—to carry yourself with swagger.

@sundogplanets Since I learned about the Kuiper Belt, I learned Dutch and realized I'd been pronouncing it wrong the whole time:

@TomSwirly @sundogplanets Now im wondering how you pronounced it.

@Soyweiser @sundogplanets I probably pronounced it "cow-per".

Closer would be "ko-per". The Dutch ui sound doesn't appear in English.

@sundogplanets
Now your field needs a logo of the god Neptune, but female. :P
@sundogplanets careful! That will get you banned in Florida.
@dcon3131 @sundogplanets OTOH calling Galatea a cis-neptunian object will get you banned from Twitter
@sundogplanets First time I've laughed out loud at a post about astronomy.
@sundogplanets you know people who know what the Kuiper Belt is???
@danielholt @sundogplanets
Around Kuiper's waist, of course.
@sundogplanets But you can’t say ‘cis-Neptunian’ any more.
@sundogplanets There's a point in common with chemists there, in terms of cis/trans isomerism 😅
@sundogplanets @AnatoleSerial I missed your joke for a second and thought the folks you were discussing were the ones who were still mad about Pluto
@sundogplanets @nomi I recently learned that the term Cis-Neptunian Object is a real term that admittedly no one uses but isn't just something I made up either.
@vikxin @sundogplanets @nomi we can even point out to those people that they live in a cis-neptunian object!
@sundogplanets what!?!? Neptune wasn't trans! He's a strong, virile, manly hunk of a god. How dare you?!?!??

@sundogplanets so earth is cis-neptunian?

or is that a slur?

@erroddy @sundogplanets
Pluto is both a trans-neptunian and (somewhat) cis-neptunian body. Triton is a proper cis-neptunian body.
@sundogplanets .. Kuiper Belt .. sounds familiar .. is where Kyber crystals come from ? ... /me takes coat ...

@sundogplanets
You mean like Pluto? Which we used to call a planet until we learnt more about it but there still some people too stubborn to update their nomenclature? Which scientists have come to understand that continuing to call it a planet would be asinine and ignorant of so much of reality?

Not sure why I felt to need to bring that up, of course you know all that, it couldn't possibly be a reference to something else.

What peeves me is not so much that Pluto is considered a planetoid, but that it was dropped from the curriculum. Instead of doing the actual inclusive act of adding all the other planetoids of our solar system to the exam
Calling it already: the submarine suddenly sank because the anti-woke self-defense circuitry decided to self-destruct the vessel as soon as it found out they were going to a trans-Atlantic ship wreckage
@sundogplanets Does that mean we live on a cis-neptunian object?
@sundogplanets Usually I tell people I study the Middle East, because that name is more easily recognized by the general public. But today I have learned that I can make *Those People* cringe just by saying the correct name:
الشرب الاوسط وشمال أفريقيا
ash-Sharq al-awsat wa shamal Ifriqiyya
