Say it with me, fam:

EpiPens and insulin should be free.

@valthonis as someone who needs an epi-pen and hasn't been able to afford one since 2019 and basically living on the edge in fear because of it
yes they should
@SympathyTea You haven't been able to gather any money in four years?? Looks like you can get one for $200 or so
@robertology i have not, mostly because any money i have made gets either drained by my father or me for food and other necessities that should be free
@valthonis I completely agree. My dad died of anaphylaxis after his doctor refused to prescribe an Epi-pen. But I also add: all medications, services, therapies, and alternative treatments by licensed practitioners in good standing should be free. No one should go broke trying to be healthy. You would THINK the government would want to protect the health of it’s citizens.
@valthonis Medicine and Healthcare in general*
At least for the US who don't have it amazingly

@valthonis here's a fun fact: the actual dose of epinephrine in an epipen costs less than a dollar.

0.4ml.

The rest of it, the throwaway plastic crap, is what they're charging hundreds of dollars.

@valthonis Absolutely. I think any life-sustaining meds should be.

@valthonis *nodds in agreement*

Putting a paywall before those lifesaving essentials is basically legalized hostagekeeping for ransom under the threat of murder...

@valthonis
"Epipens and insulin should be free!"
@valthonis all healthcare should be free!

@valthonis this is Not The Reason we should do this, but SO much money would be saved if insulin was free.

Folks with well controlled diabetes have much fewer issues (or as the healthcare industry would say, have a much smaller care burden) than uncontrolled diabetics.

Giving people the resources to treat their disease before it causes further and harder to treat issues is one of the best money saving things we could do. Insulin is so much cheaper than kidney failure.

@valthonis Apparently not in your country, in mine it is free.
@valthonis fine but say what you mean: someone else should pay for them and give them out for free.
@valthonis and in the UK, they are - medication-controlled diabetes is a condition that exempts people from NHS prescription charges
@valthonis what a hot take, people should be able to stay alive???? Ridiculous! \s
@valthonis Also: No part of the healthcare industry should be for profit.
@valthonis it is amazing to me how universal health care is very popular with Americans but not with the people that are elected to represent Americans. We totally could have this…
@valthonis @maddiefuzz
Consider adding Narcan to the list
@valthonis We should have socialized medicine instead of picking and choosing which life-saving medications are widely accessible.
@valthonis ...and all aspects of healthcare should be free of the profit motive, paid through taxes.

@valthonis

I don't disagree, but why stop there?

@valthonis and vaccines, asthma meds, heart meds, chemotherapy, antibiotics, MS drugs, Parkinson's drugs, really any drugs that treat a disease or let people have a "normal" quality of life.

Or really, as @WohaoGast mentioned, "Healthcare*"

@valthonis All healthcare and education should be free, and basic income should be a thing. Also, universal housing.
