COP21: Richest 10 per cent ‘produce half the world’s CO2 emissions’

Oxfam report comes as 150 world leaders descend on Paris for the first day of a two-week UN climate change summit

The Independent

@Sheril Also known as the "Duh" principle.

That's why the ultra rich wants us to talk about anything but climate. Be worried about anything that does not stop us from buying their products.

@WhyNotZoidberg @Sheril There’s no “they” here. If you’re reading this, you’re almost certainly in that 10%. Not that I’m disagreeing with your general point that deflection/distraction is a popular tool of the really wealthy.

@MichaelPorter
Our household in the bottom 32% of my country.
@WhyNotZoidberg Living modestly 👍🏻 😊
How did you do in comparison to the rest of the world?
@MichaelPorter Look, you don't have to push this. I am a middle aged white straight man in the western hemisphere. I have more privilege than the majority of the world. I know that.
But I have already edited the post you were concerned about.
@WhyNotZoidberg You misunderstand me - I’m not trying to rake you over the coals, just engaging in conversation. (I’m in the same demographic, btw)
@WhyNotZoidberg For the record, my teacher’s pension and circumstances puts me in the top 5% (world). Definitely feeling some mixed emotions about that!
@Sheril This ☝️ right here is why everyone should refocus their energy from scolding each other over recycling, driving EVs, or biking, etc which just causes division and instead work together to elected people who will tax the hell out of rich people so we can use that money to fix the damn problems THEY caused
@Sheril Despite some pretty good efforts: ASHP /low use old hybrid car / no fly / vegan diet / I fear that will still be me in the top brackets.

@mcoote @Sheril
I doubt that's true if you live in a place with a one of our cleaner electric grids.

Offsets are good for what is out of your control. There are good carbon offsets although many of them are not.

@Sheril YES BUT MAKE SURE YOU DON'T USE PLASTIC STRAWS
@Sheril
Ok, come on: #EatTheRich! how hard can it be, there are not THAT many
@CoolBlenderKitten @Sheril Sooooooo stringy tho
@hypnobeard @Sheril
Yes I know, but we all have to do our bite ... errr bit now. Here, have some BBQ Sauce...
@CoolBlenderKitten @Sheril Ugh, this one tastes like octopus and garlic yogurt.
@hypnobeard @Sheril
I salut your sacrifice, sir! Thank you for eating your share..
Who's next in line?
@CoolBlenderKitten @hypnobeard @Sheril We? You're on the menu, first-worlder.
@Sheril And everybody who can read that is in the top 10%.

@Sheril The number of people who don't understand they're (we're) in that 10% is hilarious.

This is GLOBALLY, folks. If you're in the US and you make $50k annually, THIS IS YOU. You're in the top 2% globally.

It's a statement on the unfathomably wide gap between developed and developing countries.

@TheTurboDiesel @Sheril

This is fully correct.

And still, if you would create such a graph for the US alone, the picture would be exactly the same.

This should therefore still lead to the same conclusions.

#taxtherich

@Sheril that’s why when I hear CEOs saying we need to pollute less I reply with a giant FUCK YOU, I don’t even drive a car but even if I did it would touch a fraction of the emissions that a company the size of Amazon and target put out, if we wanna fix pollution we have to knee cap the corporations.
@Sheril bear in mind that we in the west are that 10%
@Sheril
Although I am not "rich", it is not serious to pose the problem in this way, besides, what are they going to do when the fossil fuels run out, then more than sure the rich will continue to be responsible...?!
