Some of the hyperbole made by tech reviewers about modern laptops is just ridiculous.

You think the 15” MacBook Air is “heavy” at 2.7 pounds?

Listen up, junior: my 15” PowerBook G4 weighed 5.6 pounds and my PowerBook 5300 before that weighed 6.2 pounds.

Sure, the determination of “heavy” is relative, but even the current 16” MacBook Pro is only 4.8 pounds.

You would never have survived 90’s laptops. 😉

@gadgetboy It's the same for phone reviewers. They seem to think the public wants phones that weigh less than a sheet of paper with batteries that last 2.5 seconds. My ideal phone only needs to be charged once a month and can be thrown through a window with a note tied to it as a threat. It should be held together with drywall screws and replacement parts should be available at Lowe's.
@Klaxun @gadgetboy I really miss my kevlar cased Droid. Sigh.
@Klaxun @gadgetboy Personally I /do/ want something that fits in a pocket, but beyond that? Chonk is good!

@IceWolf @Klaxun @gadgetboy

Oh, I miss the days when my phone fit in my pocket. I could pull the back off, rip the battery out, access a fair amount of internal gubbins, and it was *still* lighter than my current phone. I don't actually need an enormous screen, just sensibly designed apps and websites that aren't full of visual bloat.

@JetlagJen @Klaxun @gadgetboy Oh that sounds awesome.

...and we must have big pockets >,,>

@IceWolf @Klaxun @gadgetboy

My body is the wrong shape for "mens" clothes, so I'm stuck with tiny pockets. And still my pull-apart phone from a few years ago fit in them.

My current phone has a "one hand" mode which shrinks everything to one corner of the screen, so I can actually type with one thumb. But it's still physically too broad for me to hold one handed.

@JetlagJen @IceWolf @Klaxun @gadgetboy I can still get to the internals of my fair phone. Very much pleases me.

@drgs100

I will definitely be looking at a fair phone when my current one needs replaced.

@JetlagJen I'm really pleased with my current phone, even replaced the charging point for £20. Feeling like I've been priced out of the next version when this one gives up.
@drgs100 yeah, they're not cheap. I'll need to weigh it up. If there's a good chance it'll last twice as long as the Samsung I'd otherwise buy, I don't mind paying twice as much. Significantly more gets more difficult to justify.

In Europe, from 2027 onwards, all new phones need to have replaceable batteries again.

Most likely that will then apply to all phones in the world, so for you as well.

@paulschoe @IceWolf @Klaxun @gadgetboy

As with all such laws (ones that are actively good for ordinary people), this is definitely positive, but also feels very small and slow.

@Klaxun @gadgetboy You're making me miss my Moto Zplay2 and its slap-on battery pack.

@Klaxun @gadgetboy That angers me so much. My phone has decent battery life by todays standards, but it could easily be twice as thick and still be comfortable. I'd pay extra.

Hell, thicker phones could fit, in addition to larger batteries, better heat sinks and mobile gaming could really take off with better performance for just a few more cents of aluminum and plastic.

@anniethebruce @Klaxun @gadgetboy I have seen people cut a hole in their phone case and add a heat sink. For extra performance, put on top of a water glass with ice water!
@anniethebruce @Klaxun @gadgetboy I simply want a phone that won’t break when you drop it, that has a recharger that won’t short-circuit after a month, and that only needs charging every other day.
@Klaxun @gadgetboy Do they even MAKE drywall screws with secure torx heads though
@Klaxun @gadgetboy Tell me you had a Nokia 3210 without telling me you had a Nokia 3210.

@Klaxun @gadgetboy THIS and honestly I'd like heavier stuff if it was well-built, easy to repair or get repaired, etc.

Like, I wish the "rugged design" stuff would be cheaper and more widely applied. Would be nice to have stuff that could survive drops, spills, etc

@jellycrystals @Klaxun With the custom covers! And the aftermarket vibrating battery!

@Klaxun
All of what you just said but additionally why is my phone screen so large that I can't use it properly one handed? Who asked for this?

@gadgetboy

@mnemonicoverload @Klaxun I had a “Max” iPhone model for one generation. Never again. It’s like carrying a baking sheet in your pocket.

@Klaxun @gadgetboy

Perhaps this should be discussed more
