Look playing RPGs isn't just an escapist power fantasy. The fantasy is about having clear and well-defined problems which can be addressed through straightforward if challenging tasks. It's reassuring to imagine that there are some big problems which can be solved by a small group of dedicated individuals. And then there's the ultimate fantasy: forget casting magical spells; RPG characters get to sleep eight hours in a night and wake up feeling refreshed.
@tomlowenthal I talk about this all. the. time. I really want to learn about liberation psychology and if TTRPGS, specifically ones where your objectives are achievable, have anything to inform one another on.
@venusianvixen Right? Let’s imagine, just for a moment, that you’re a valued member of society, that people care about you and your success, that you’re able to take concrete actions which help others, that your voice is respected and considered for your expertise…
@tomlowenthal Not only imagine, but those memories are stored as if all of those *actually happened.*
The euphoria you get from saving the town is *real*

@tomlowenthal @venusianvixen How odd that in Traveller, PCs generally don't have the ability to affect large scale events* instead often end up wrestling with questions like "how do I pay this month's mortage", "can we eat the passengers who don't survive cold sleep," and "does my sudden tendency to fumble coffee cups have anything to do with my recent failed aging roll?"

* I think I just realized why I didn't care for GDW's metaplots.

@tomlowenthal @donmelton What group have *you* been playing with that comes up with straightforward solutions to things?

#TTRPG #DnD #RPG #RolePlaying #gaming

@mjgardner @tomlowenthal @donmelton being a muderhobo _is_ a straightforward solution ;)

@tomlowenthal
"I must sleep, then eat, then pray in silence for an hour to be productive again."

"Okay, go ahead."

Fantasy scenario right there.

@tomlowenthal ...am I doing it wrong if I _don't_ present the PCs with clear and straightforward tasks that can be resolved in a straightforward manner? 😉

(I guess it's still a power fantasy because the PCs can still actually succeed at things...)

@tomlowenthal rpgs also have a clear set of to do items that I can totally get completed. See! I can complete tasks 👀👀👀
@tomlowenthal in a way it's a way to teach and train problem solving. get problems, brainstorm what to do, whoops random interference (dice rolls), results.
@tomlowenthal
my ultimate RPG fantasy is being able to scarf down 18 wheels of cheese in 2 seconds.
@tomlowenthal
Also, medical facilities in the Dungeons and Dragons world tell you up front what your procedure is gonna cost.
@DougWar40k I don't want to spoil anything, but that's pretty common. It's really just a small number of countries which make medical care a nightmare on purpose.

@tomlowenthal THIS! This this this this this.

Unless you're Shepard from the Mass Effect series, or Link in Zelda. Then you just never have to sleep, and never have to pay any price for not sleeping.

@tomlowenthal you forget a full unbroken night sleep in 5 seconds
