I like seeing all the different styles people use for ink swatching--if anyone is curious, here are the tools and process I've been using. #FountainPens #FountainPenInk #InkSwatch

After using the side of a glass dip nib to spread ink, which worked but would scrape these col-o-dex/col-o-ring cards leaving messy dark lines, I rummaged through my tools and found this little tool in a wax-carving kit that is like a spoon with a smooth back that doesn't scrape and easily fits into bottles. 1/4

I use the metal spoon tool to spread ink along the edge of the col-o-ring card and in a band across 3/4 the top of the col-o-dex card. I grab the dropper cap from a small glass bottle of clean water to place drops of water, then use the small bit of ink purposely left on the metal tool to create a diluted ink wash. (This is a helpful reference for using inks for both art and writing.) Finally, I use the dropper with water to rinse the tool into a metal condiment cup and dry it with a towel. 2/4

Next I grab a metal dip nib pen with some flex to write the brand and ink name on the cards, with added "flex loops" on the col-o-ring card. Here I used a disposable Warren "penny pen" with a paper holder that was made over 100 years ago.

The cards are moved to the side to dry, and the col-o-ring card is done. You can see the shimmer in this ink more as it dries. I rinse the metal nib with clean water from the dropper into the condiment cup and dry it. 3/4

Once the col-o-dex card is completely dry, I use a glass dip nib and/or metal dip nib pen to add a quick sketch based on the name, color, or label of the ink. For this card I used the drawing from the label as the reference, "Brane" is a term in string theory.

These sketches help show off the ink being used in different ways, and I just enjoy the look. Even if I end up disappointed in how a drawing turns out, it's all good practice.

That's it! How do you #InkSwatch ? 4/4
