So, what's going on with all this #RedditMigration #Lemmy #kbin stuff?

Short version. Reddit is a mess. Users are fleeing to the #Fediverse.

There are two Fedi #Reddit alternatives you can join, Lemmy and kbin.

kbin: https://fedia.io/register (also https://kbin.social/register but now slammed)
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup

New migrants please be patient. This is a lot like Nov 2022. It will be choppy, but get sorted out. This is another golden opportunity to break down corporate social media.

#Lemmy and #kbin are part of the Fediverse and you can see their content on Mastodon, but you currently get more functionality by creating a kbin or Lemmy account account:

kbin: https://fedia.io/register (also https://kbin.social/register but now slammed)
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup

Right now there are not many instances for either, but that does not mean the Fediverse can not handle a surge. Yesterday Mastodon's infosec.exchange spun up fedia.io (kbin) and infosec.pub (Lemmy) .

There is every reason to suspect that other established Mastodon instances will jump into the breach to help with #RedditMigration .

We are going to see chaotic and exciting days ahead as the Fediverse once again adds capacity, new users build out content, and developers make rapid fire improvements to their applications. But this is what we do best.

Be patient. You are part of the existential shift from corporate domination to people powered social media.

We got this.

I'm trying to be helpful when I say that your first sentence makes no sense to me at all. I don't know what "established Mastodon instances are" or what breach you are talking about. I'm just a user and that sort of statement is baffling.

@edteja Sorry. Back in November the amount of overall #Fediverse server capacity was relatively small. The #twittermigration inspired many well resourced Mastodon servers (actually server farms). These same systems can be used for kbin and Lemmy instances, and already two large Mastodon instance infosec.exchange and mastodon.world are "jumping into the breach" and offering kbin and Lemmy instances. https://infosec.pub/signup, https://fedia.io/register, https://lemmy.world/signup

@edteja Further, this situation highlights one of the amazing and wonderful things about the #Fediverse. The underlying technology, #ActivityPub, is the same for all of these applications, so it is relatively easy for those familiar with one to host others. This has profound implications for the future of an entire constellation the social media applications on the Fediverse. Contrast the corporate apps which are all independent technologies with different code and do not talk to each other.
@mastodonmigration
I really appreciate the attempt to explain. But I don't know what an "instance" is in your world (much less kbin or Lemmy), so it's still mystical. The post came across as something everyone is dealing with, so I was a bit perplexed.
@edteja "Instance" in the #Fediverse refers to the actual software running on the server handling your account. For instance, in your case, your "instance" is "mastodonbooks.net". Somewhere there is a computer that is running a copy of Mastodon that is the mastodonbooks.net "instance". When you log into mastodonbooks.net that happens on this server, and all your posts are run by this equipment. Because mastodonbooks.net is "federated" on the "Fediverse" it then talks to all the other instances.

@edteja In the case of #kbin. On Mastodon there are thousands of instances big and small. On #kbin right now there are very instances of which https://fedia.io and https://kbin.social are two. You can sign up to either one, just as you chose a server on Mastodon.

To keep it simple. In the lexicon "Server" and "Instance" are pretty much synonymous.
