"Once we start realising that diagnostic criteria for all mental health "conditions" are based on the neurodivergent person in distress, we must become curious about what these neurodivergent minds would look like in a world that didn't cause them to suffer."

@KaCi @actuallyautistic I sent a message to someone who referred to autism symptoms, letting them know that it’s actually burnout symptoms.

Autism is not a bad thing.

@KaCi @actuallyautistic Burnout symptoms are what a lot of people think are "symptoms of autism." That "autism" gets worse or better. But it's not.

They're two entirely different things. My burnout gets worse or better.

My autism is like the sun shining on the earth. Unseen at times, but always there.

@KaCi @actuallyautistic Now that I think of it, I was able to discard the "autism is a disability" mindset in the span of months.

Which was the first thing that really helped.

Like Oprah gave me a sports car and I had to pay tax BUT I have a sports car now and I want to race it.

Then, it became a matter of research and practice. I'm so good at that I used to get in trouble for it.🤣

@KaCi @actuallyautistic

Realizing and understanding that is helping me a lot. It also helps me stand firm when other people try to tell me that I have not felt what I have felt. And that I have a right to say that this world has been a difficult one for me. I know that makes them uncomfortable but honestly that's nowhere near the discomfort and shame that I've been made to feel nearly all my life.

@KaCi @actuallyautistic And they wonder why we like comic books and anime.

Like they don't? Do they consider us that inhuman?

@KaCi @actuallyautistic

I think we should start with the realisation that the dignostic criteria for #autistic people are made by #Allistics.

Allistic researchers judge autistic behaviour by their own needs.

Would you say it's smart to ask a bird to judge gill breathing by their own pulmonary respiration needs? Would be plain stupid.

So how come that we #actuallyautistic are judged by allistic needs?

@KaCi

Random question, but why do people use a.gup.pe when there are Hashtags? I noticed you use them so I wanted to ask.

@Rush the group post appear in my home timeline, the hashtags don't.
@KaCi You can follow Hashtags on your instance, though

@KaCi I'd be fascinated -- though probably also very depressed -- to know who my daughter and I would be if we hadn't experienced so much trauma.

@actuallyautistic

@KaCi @actuallyautistic I disagree with this view for a couple reasons. If I hyper focus and forget to eat, that’s not something the world did. Same when I forget things all the time. Alternately, I can’t put my anxiety on the world. It definitely causes me distress but the world isn’t doing anything wrong. Defining problems as caused by the outside world invalidates many real internal problems that affect people.

@norgralin @KaCi @actuallyautistic

In my view, if you forget to eat or hyperfocus or forget things in ways that are harmful (to you or to others) then yes, that is something the world did. The world refrained from providing the supports you need to be a caring and cared for part of the community. That’s on the world, not on you. In my opinion.

@Gtmlosangeles @KaCi @actuallyautistic there is a large gulf between harm and harm that necessitates societal intervention. Not eating when I should is a pain in the ass in terms of impacts but not something to sacrifice autonomy over.
@actuallyautistic @norgralin @KaCi I do see your point, which appears to align with what many people in our current society seem to believe. From my perspective, that is exactly the entire role of society, to intervene in a manner to prevent harm (unless an individual desires no such intervention).
@norgralin
There is a difference between being curious about how neurodivergent minds might look like in a world that didn't cause them to suffer and denying that internal problems in the world how it currently is exist.
@KaCi oh I certainly agree that there are massive improvements that could be made in how society accommodates us. Part my point is that our capitalist society tends to treat the non revenue related issues we face as unimportant. Which also shapes how treatment is prioritized.
