In 2020, only 3.6% of the world’s population lived outside their country of birth. This has already led to a lot of anti-migrant rhetoric and policies.

Imagine when 33% of humanity have to migrate.

And we haven't even mentioned the migration of animals, insects, and arachnids, and how that could lead to more deadly disease outbreaks and global pandemics.

Climate Crisis Is on Track to Push One-Third of Humanity Out of Its Most Livable Environment

As conditions that best support life shift toward the poles, more than 600 million people are already living outside of a crucial “climate niche,” facing more extreme heat, rising food scarcity and higher death rates.

@davidho @[email protected] Humanity has historically only thrived in a narrow climate band, which we are now exiting.

Edit: I'm not a scientist, and humanity may also thrive in the absence of, for example, nuclear war or global plastic waste - many variables here

@davidho I may actually be anti-immigrant for spiders, whether or not they steal jobs
@davidho Yeeeeeea, now's not an ideal time to bring kids into the world. The future isn't looking so great.

@davidho
“By late this century, according to a study published last mo in the journal Nature Sustainability, 3-6 billion people, or between 1/3 & 1/2 of humanity, could be trapped outside of that zone, facing extreme heat, food scarcity & higher death rates, unless #emissions are sharply curtailed or mass #migration is accommodated.”

W/all of human imagination…
We don’t constructively act to prevent what will surely be as “devastating”…
To humanity…as it was to the dinosaurs.

@davidho countries will probably still make up excuses to not let people seek asylum
@davidho No part of the world is immune
@davidho truth. Only getting worse.
@davidho Trees and plants do not migrate quickly. And therefore the animals that depend on those trees and plants will also not migrate quickly. Extinction is the likely outcome.
@davidho I think its very important to always point out that migration doesn't 'lead' to racism. racism is a part of the white society, wether anyone migrates or not.
@davidho
Sadly, that train has already left the station and all we can do now is wait n prepare for it's arrival. 😒
@davidho I would suggest not letting them in.
@davidho @charles_ex sell beach house
@msgbi Uhm, who are you going to sell your beach house to - Aquaman?
@davidho I freely admit that this is pedantic pet peeve bullshit but insects and arachnids ARE animals. Oh. And so are humans.

@davidho

Migration sucks.
I live in Thailand with my wife, and the extortion by immigration is constant.

Migrants to the US have different problems, but they are no less severe.

@davidho We have about 30 more years. Tops. Human life won't end, but modern society likely will. On top of it all we'll have over 2 billion more people in the world.

@davidho Interesting statistic. I live in Aotearoa New Zealand where the 2018 Census showed that 27% of people in NZ were born in another country. Covid lockdowns may have slowed down our welcomes but not by much. We've benefited from the cultural diversity that people have brought to Aotearoa from other lands.

Of course I'm sad about forced migrations and their causes but inflow of new people should be celebrated nor feared.
