Mike Pence’s presidential announcement got 5 retweets.

Can this picture of my dog’s butt beat that?

@briannawu not without alt text on the image
@gsuberland THE DESCRIPTION IS LITERALLY THERE IN THE ORIGINAL POST MY DUDE
@briannawu oh, ok, I guess we have different standards of alt text.
@briannawu (this was not intended to be a nag, fwiw, I just figured you forgot to add it)
@briannawu @gsuberland don’t dodge. Use the alt text. It’s important.
@gewalker @briannawu @gsuberland it's in the original post so a description would be redundant.
@xero @briannawu @gsuberland I’m sorry, but no. Alt text radically improves the experience of using a screen reader regardless of context. It’s why I nag someone I would otherwise not.
@gewalker In your opinion. I find it to be an annoyance.

@briannawu @gsuberland BUT HOW DO WE KNOW THE IMAGE MATCHES THE DESCRIPTION IN THE POST IF WE CAN’T SEE THE PICTURE & there’s no alt text to tell us so?

*For all we know, “a picture of my dog’s butt” could be a photo of your least favorite politician.

@gsuberland Part of the reason I like to call it an image description rather than "alt text" is that people get too hung up on it being in the alt tag and that's really unnecessary. It's not even relevant for most social media users whether it's literally "alt" text or not. It makes descriptions sound like a technical issue and they're a social issue.

@briannawu

@bright_helpings yes. see additional replies; I explained my position further down.
@gsuberland All I can see is you saying people have different standards of alt text, so sorry I guess your explanation hasn't federated to my instance.
Graham Sutherland / Polynomial (@[email protected])

@[email protected] @[email protected] not really a fan of the perfunctory style of alt text. I'd have gone with something like "the fluffy bum and curly tail of a light grey [whatever breed] dog, stood on a concrete slab outside". keep in mind that people in the replies often talk about the content of the image, rather than just the thing you're posting about, so if you only describe the most basic of intent then you're leaving folks who use screenreaders out of that conversation.

@briannawu

Well I don't think it's clear from the pic that this is supposed to be a dog's butt.

FAKE NEWS! SAD!!!

@briannawu It's hard to tell which end of your floofy dog I am looking at, but she/he is better looking, smarter, and probably a whole lot more authentic than Pence. Definitely deserves more attention!
@Barbramon1 @briannawu And likely attracts far fewer flies
@llywrch Would make a better President, too. 🤪
@briannawu Why don't you care that the world is starving?
@briannawu already at 25 as I look, happy to help boost that fluffy butt even more.
@briannawu Pence might gain more traction if Trump ends up in jail before the election, and if de Santis ends up in legal trouble.
@briannawu
I think your dog's butt would also get more votes in the primaries than Pence!

@briannawu Best damn dog butt I have seen all day, and trust me I've seen a lot of dog butt. Boost worthy dog butt.

@briannawu I try not to be too cynical, but where twitter's involved I think it's 100% called for: how do we know that any of the displayed stats are accurate? Dude's got 5.7M followers. The retweet numbers I'm seeing, on *any* of his tweets, are oddly low.
@briannawu: Your dog's butt is better looking than Mike Pence.
@briannawu retweeted! Let's beat Mike Pence! 😎
@briannawu @[email protected] Ahh I'd boost it but it has no alt text! We blind folx like to know allllll about that BASS!!!😁😃
