YouTube legal team contacted us · Issue #3872 · iv-org/invidious

They don't understand that we never agreed to any of their TOS/policies, they don't understand that we don't use their API. What now? Things will continue normally until they can't anymore. Assume ...

GitHub
@invidious Not surprising given their recent crackdown on people that care about their rights. Thanks for keeping us up to date on this.
@invidious Best of luck dealing with this!
@invidious they shoot themselves on their foot once again
@invidious Will there be plans for development to move from github to gitea? Right now it looks like the gitea repo just a mirror.

@nemo We're prepared, yes, but the move is unlikely.

I don't really see on what legal basis they'd ask Github to shutdown our repo (a DMCA claim is not applicable, and we violate none of their intellectual property nor ToS).

@invidious god what a flex. "I'm not your user, brand" force a corp to show its malicious hand in full
@invidious Oh no, they're gonna revoke your API keys. 😄

@art Oh no!! We're doomed!! xD

@invidious It seems like if Google-YouTube really cared they could keep you tied up in court no-matter whether you were actually breaking TOS or copyright. I don’t know where you operate, but that’s a pretty respectable bold move to stand up against them.

@invidious
IANAL but...

... this inane 'Cease and Desist' letter may be a warning shot. It may not be the last you hear from them. What happens to Invidious sets a precedent for all Free Code front-ends.

I suggest seeking support from an org that a) supports software freedom, and b) has lawyers who specialise in this stuff, and won't charge you to have them look into it. The EFF, for example or the SFLC.

They may even be able to tell you what's likely to come next, and how best to respond.

@invidious
I heard about this take down notice through the Youtuber Louis Rossman. I find it weird that they want to take down Invidious because of API violations, but Invidious doesn't use the API. It makes no sense to me.

In any case I just started using Invidious, and I really enjoy it. Thank you!

It's great to see in the github thread that there is solidarity and mutual support between projects like #NewPipe and #Invidious . Also great that there is already a fallback gitea.invidious.io/iv-org !

@invidious hi, my friends, I use Invidious everyday and I support you wholeheartedly. You did great.

@invidious So, they contacted you by #email. It would have been really fun if your mail server had rejected connections from *.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com, as #Google’s mail server does the same to other people. Would have been #poeticJustice for sure.

Perhaps it would actually be useful to install a mail server that blanket rejects all connections from #CAGEMAFIA. Anyone doing anything that might gain attention from those orgs would be bounced.

Sure they could create a protonmail account just to reach you, but that’s the fun part. And it’s fair enough.
