Apollo to shut down; developer has receipts

Apollo Developer Christian Selig, who has been trying to find a way to keep his app alive despite an enormous new charge for connecting to Reddit, has given up: June 30th will be Apollo’s las…

Six Colors
@jsnell It’s probably just the timing, but I can't help but get big Chris Licht vibes from him 🥴
@jsnell What's with social media company CEOs being awful?

@crh @jsnell The ability and incentives to successfully grow and manage a fledgling social media website business, and the ability and incentives to responsibly protect and promote public interests on a fully grown community-creating platform have little to do with each other.

(…is my guess. Lots of different factors, including that CEOs tend to be executive manifestations of capital-focused corporate management collectives.)

@jsnell Hey, we got an ipo coming up here! Nice app, would hate anything to happen to it.
@jsnell I’m just amazed by the complete slander they threw at Selig as if they weren’t uprooting one of the most influential apps in Reddit’s history.
@jsnell You nailed it. “Whoops” indeed.
@jsnell
Anyone closing their paid Apollo accounts, please don't ask for reimbursements if you can afford to.
@jsnell If Elon is any indication, reddit's CEO should be subject to worship shortly. I'm sick about this.
@idioteque @jsnell "he's cleaning up the platform, he's getting rid of all the woke apps, did you know he could read an encyclopedia at 9? amazing genius!"
@iwamoto His tears cure cancer. Too bad he never cries
@jsnell @jrbj I won't be requesting a refund for Apollo, but I won't be using Reddit anymore either. Reddit without Apollo is intolerable.
@jsnell I wish there was something we could do
@jsnell so freaking bummed about this. Apollo’s design is, if not “Mac-assed” as Gruber would say, then surely supremely “iPhone-assed.” One of my very favorite apps. Damn Reddit’s CEO…
@jsnell what's the big deal? Reddit has their own app which..oh hang on... Jason I'm just getting word that it's a piece of garbage that no one should use, oh my god, what have they done?!
@iwamoto They could've just said they were shutting down third-party client access, then they'd just be jerks but not liars
@jsnell I'm really curious about the AMA tomorrow, watch the CEO look like both a Jerk, a Liar and so much more
@jsnell @iwamoto This is honestly the most hilarious part of this self-inflicted wound. If reddit had simply said "sorry, 3rd party apps aren't part of our business plan going forward" it would have still been stupid, but probably over quickly. They somehow managed to make stepping on their own dick an 8+ week long event.
@charlesesmith @jsnell it's a managers' disease I think, in Feb. they announced changes and layoffs at my current job, only yesterday did they finally announce everything they planned. Needless to say, I didn't wait and found a better job, which I think is also what a bunch of people should/will do on reddit, just go to greener pastures.
@jsnell Racist, sexist, homophobic and a few other assorted things, as well...
@jsnell This is one way to cure me of going on reddit. It worked well with Twitter!
@jsnell @matt Really looking forward to his AMA tomorrow. I’m sure users will have plenty of questions for him. https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/144ho2x/join_our_ceo_tomorrow_to_discuss_the_api/
Join our CEO tomorrow to discuss the API

Reddit CEO, u/spez, will be here tomorrow to host an AMA about the latest API updates, including accessibility, mod bots, and third-party mod tools.

reddit
@JoshHrach @jsnell Yeah, we’ll see how that goes… Honestly it’s a no win situation for him now. What could he possibly say that makes people go, “you know what, I’m not actually that upset about all these apps we love going away.”
@matt @jsnell Exactly. If anything, I'm curious how much deeper in his hole he can go. 🕳️
@jsnell It's amazing that the CEO of a company that hosts an enormously connected community thought he could pull off this stunt.
@jsnell when I said that thing about your Twitterific shirt, I didn't think Apollo would go away the next day.
@fifthrocket I was thinking the same thing.
@jsnell I have enjoyed Reddit through the Apollo app for so many years. I have been a moderator of two communities and learned so much there. This evening I deleted my account. What they are doing is inexcusable.
@jsnell I just cancelled my paid membership. I feel like reddit does not understand I the user am who they need to please and keep happy. I will not delete my account but reddit just motivated me to put more effort into moving to options such as this one that are owned by nobody.
