Hey, everybody, the CDC says we should stop eating raw cookie dough because 18 people were sickened.

Meanwhile, keep breathing in #COVID19 in big crowded spaces without a mask. It's only hospitalized 422,000 and killed 38,000 Americans so far in 2023.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/05/25/raw-cookie-dough-salmonella-illness/

The CDC wants people to stop eating raw cookie dough. But it’s so tasty.

A salmonella outbreak linked to raw cookie dough has sickened at least 18 people across six states, according to the CDC.

The Washington Post
@augieray But there's a huge difference: telling us not to eat raw cookie dough doesn't upset any plutocrats.
@augieray The irony of the whole thing is not lost on me.

@augieray That's it. From here on out, only making masks out of cookie dough.

Since that means I'll be eating them, I'll need to carry around a lot of cookie dough. But that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

@augieray
This is the work of Big Cake Batter. No raw cookie dough but notice how the CDC doesn’t warn against licking the cake batter remnants from the bowl or from the beaters?
@RuthODay @augieray The flour bags say cook before eating. Been licking beaters 70+ years. :)

@stevewfolds @augieray
Licking beaters for 57 years, myself.

And eating raw hamburger. : )

@augieray @RuthODay Had steak tartare. They charge extra for not cooking the hamburger. :)

@stevewfolds @augieray
Only the best for you, Steve!

I pay extra, too.

In Germany they have this thing called “Mettbrötchen”, which is a sandwich made of minced raw pork (Mett), which I tried and lived to tell the tale, along with millions of Germans (maybe Austrians and Swiss, too?).

@RuthODay @augieray not to be that reply guy, but the CDC does warn against raw cake batter too

@peterbutler @augieray
Right you are, thank you for the follow-through.
@augieray
Surely thoughts and prayers should suffice...?
@augieray That's insane. Has covid in 2023 really killed three times as many people in the US as gun violence???

@bcaligari @augieray

"In United States of America, from 3 January 2020 to 6:07pm CEST, 31 May 2023, there have been 103,436,829 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,127,152 deaths, reported to WHO"

Roughly 1.1m deaths from COVID in the US.

https://covid19.who.int/region/amro/country/us

"the US has seen more than 39,000 gun deaths a year since 2014, and as of 1 May at least 13,959 people have been shot dead in 2023"

About 351,000 US gun deaths in 9 years.

@srfirehorseart @augieray It's just messed up. Totally unnecessary and no lessons ever learnt.

@bcaligari @augieray

Meanwhile, in Japan they still wear masks in public spaces. However, changes to testing meant results were harder to track
Japan's main weakness seems to be anong older citizens, who were harder hit last Winter.

"In Japan, from 3 January 2020 to 12:23pm CEST, 7 June 2023, there have been 33,803,572 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 74,694 deaths, reported to WHO"

@augieray It’s interesting where they want people to take responsibility. The food safety teams are a bit separate from the infectious disease teams, and haven’t had their funding yanked away.
And it’s World Food Safety Day, so that’s the press release du jour
@augieray well, when you put it like that, it just sounds silly, don't it?

@augieray

I know covid-19 is the bigger deal, but you can get pasteurized eggs and you can pasteurize flour at home reducing the chance of hard to practically zero.

@augieray

who wore a mask all evening yesterday, on the BART trains into & out of #SanFrancisco & then at the crowded #opera house? *this gal* plus about 20 others (from what I could discern). 😦

@Studio_Gal @augieray Good job. What’d you see?

@steven_vlad @augieray

Madame Butterfly

This was the fourth production of Butterfly I've seen over the course of -- oh heavens, 38 years now? First Pinkerton I ever saw was Placido Domingo in L.A. "back in the day"

@augieray @shyra Yeah that seems… Off.

I’ll continue to eat cookie dough but choose high quality ingredients that i make dough from fresh.

Also, congratulations, you’ve convinced me to bake some cookies.

@augieray

What they aren't saying is how many epidemiologists got ill after eating raw cookie dough at a CDC sleepover last month.

@rjblaskiewicz That made me laugh. Thanks.
@augieray I'm so terrified of both that I think I'll boycott cookie dough and drive solo wearing a mask. Might bathe in bleach on a regular basis too. New normal here.
@augieray you mean to tell me that the US hasn't vaccinated it's chicken flock against salmonella? huh 🤔
@scaramanga @augieray At the farmers market I used to work at the vendor next to me used to make a big deal to her customers about the fact that all her meat came from vaccine free animals. The fact that she always had a long line was one of the reasons I got out of the markets.

@augieray Let those who thought their "natural immunity" would dealt with #SARS2 eat cookie dough all they want.

You can lead a horse/camel to water…

@augieray There goes my plan to make a mask from raw cookie dough, I guess
COVID outbreak at CDC gathering infects 181 disease detectives

@augieray

Is there a community anywhere that still masks? (If so, I'd like to move there) I travel a lot and wherever I go I seem to be the only one wearing one

@Mickrob9777 @augieray

Japan did insist on masks and other COVID precautions until Apri/Mayl 2023.

Many restrictions in Japan have become optional now but most people still wear masks.

@srfirehorseart @augieray

Anything you know of in the U.S.?

@Mickrob9777 @augieray

My best guess (I'm in the UK) would be to look at current hospital admissions for areas with lower levels of transmission. They're either taking more precautions or have lower levels of risk.

Or start a new post.
Maybe tags like #CovidUSA and #covidmasks would help.

Good luck.

@augieray how about USDA tells farmers to fucking vaccinate their chickens. There’s no reason we can’t have safe eggs except corporate farms don’t want to pay for it
@tlduffy1962 @augieray My answer to that is don't eat it because you might get sick. That's a risk you take if you choose to eat it. As for COVID, it's still around and can strike at any time. For that reason, I still choose to mask in certain situations.
@augieray Also, raw cookie dough is gross.

YouTube
@augieray and the flu stats? Way more. That is what it is now. An endemic. The answer to the risk is get vaccinated or continue wearing a mask. No one’s stopping you.

@StevenBarnhart Your data is incorrect. To compare apples to apples, here is the data from the CDC since October 1 (which is when flu season starts):

Flu deaths: 19,000 – 58,000
Flu hospitalizations: 300,000 – 650,000

COVID deaths: 100,000
COVID hospitalizations: 800,000

Preliminary In-Season 2021-2022 Flu Burden Estimates

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

@augieray you aren’t being honest. The CDC estimates are only until April. So doing that math:

Deaths: 1128364-1058825 = 70k
Hospitalizations: 6,134,177 - 5,367,647 = 766k

Where did you get 100k deaths?

Not that different from the flu.

@StevenBarnhart The flu season is over. There have been little to no deaths or hospitalizations since April. Meanwhile, COVID is still mutating, infecting and killing people. There is no COVID season. That's what makes your insistence flu is worse incorrect.
@augieray the WHO and CDC (actual doctors and scientists) agree that the pandemic is over and it’s not a concern like the flu.

@StevenBarnhart Also untrue.

WHO ended the global health emergency but warned: "The worst thing any country could do now is to use this news as a reason to let down its guard, to dismantle the systems it has built, or to send the message to its people that COVID-19 is nothing to worry about." https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-01577-x

@augieray you never let your guard down. They also recommend you get yearly flu shots.
@augieray fwiw the CDC appears to be talking about a pre-packaged cookie dough that has made 18 people sick and should be thrown away, and not cookie dough in general (although I'm sure they discourage that too). https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/enteritidis-05-23/index.html

@augieray The CDC totally screwed their credibility during COVID by constantly giving out conflicting information. I no longer trust their advice.
@augieray Vegan cookie dough is safe to eat raw!

@augieray I'm filing this right next to the "don't eat raw chopped beef" advisory.

(In Belgium, for a bit of context.)

@augieray thank you for demonstrating the fallacy that because one thing is more important that we should not do anything else.

It's like saying that we should stop all medical research except into the top 10 killers because nothing else is important.

Furthermore, comparing COVID with food safety work is apples and oranges, they're very different types of work.

@augieray
