Funny how Apple set out to make a realtime OS for a car, but ended up using it for ski goggles instead.

(I joke, but snark aside, this is one of the most satisfying parts of engineering: repurposing what you've built for something totally new.)

@caseyliss I’m a bit scared now about people driving while wearing a #VisionPro
@mjgardner @caseyliss I was looking around for CarPlay support :-)
@caseyliss When I was watching the presentation I was thinking about how some of the problems they solved before helped them build the vision pro. Like the TrueDepth camera, AirPlay-ing Mac screen to another device, Universal Control (maybe). Fascinating when solving one problem helps other areas.
@caseyliss there are probably uses of that real-time assurance layer that will apply everywhere, like the IO guarantees applied in gaming mode.
@caseyliss as I was listening to ATP I was reminded of all the various steps it took to get here: spatial audio, AR, the depth sensors. Apple was really smart to bring each puzzle piece to us gradually so that now we can see the whole picture.
@caseyliss The component in the OS layer diagram you’re referring to was engineered entirely in TDG, starting in 2018.
@alexr wait which component? We recorded for a few minutes last night. 🤪😵‍💫
@caseyliss The realtime layer.
@alexr So you're saying it *was* from Titan then. 😏
@caseyliss No, I said it was entirely done in TDG.

@alexr What is TDG then?

I'm too far removed from the acronym soup that is modern corporate America

AR/VR Software Engineer - Technology Development Group (TDG) - Careers at Apple

Apply for a AR/VR Software Engineer - Technology Development Group (TDG) job at Apple. Read about the role and find out if it’s right for you.

@caseyliss TDG is the department behind ARKit, RealityKit, and the Vision Pro. The VP is Mike Rockwell -- his title during the presentations refers to the group name Technology Development Group.
@alexr Ah, thanks, I missed that. It's been a long 24 hours. 😵‍💫
@caseyliss Also - we finally got an Apple branded television, right, kinda? :-)
@caseyliss brave to assume this isn’t *also* meant for a car!
@caseyliss Learning by making. “This is the way.”
