it's wank
it's absolute wank
the reason you all headcanon bolters as massive explosive ordnance is because space marines couldn't hit shit with them in real life. they need the explosion to splash damage what they're aiming at lololol

the safest place to stand is where the space marines are aiming
star wars storm troopers level shit
you know what i hope gw does actually come out and say bolter rounds are the size of fucking energy cans
that way it's canon bolter magazines only hold like what, 6 rounds? 8 rounds?
space marines run out of ammo about 10 seconds into any enemy contact, that's why they have chain swords
bolter is for losers
get a lasgun. shit is a directed energy weapon that somehow runs off solar
this is basically like someone offering you a stick of dynamite or a magic sword
you take the magic sword
know what's really annoying? they absolutely coulda just straight up specialized space marines given the level of sheer weight carry/mass they gave them
like okay, no, you are not sniping someone a mile away with your shit for brains designed pistol
but you can carry a ton of ammo on your back and just hose an area with machinegun fire
just a hulking mass of suppression fire
but no, they instead gave them generic ass power armor and then a generic ass fantasy do-it-all pistol
you coulda had a space marine sniper be able to just smash through buildings to better positions
you coulda had a space marine shotgunner just completely hold one hallway by himself. just filling the entire corridor with lead (or whatever space material you want). just flak cannon the shit out of that sector
i'm actually a lot less mad about space marine pauldrons than i thought i'd be
i mean they still do not make any geometric/combat sense, but it bothers me less than the bolters
i think they're related actually lol
i think in my head space marines shoot like the soldiers in the starship troopers movie
so they don't aim or anything, not really
so their arms don't actually ever have to move up that high. but also even if that was true that seems like a hindrance for melee combat
i think this is /less/ of a lore problem, since if you want (at least terminator) power armor to be able to give you spatial awareness and biofeedback then it seems more plausible you could at least sort of track some kind of semi-accurate shoot from the hip fire
but also you are giving up a pretty big advantage which is that space marines are tall
like really tall. taller in power armor
the height advantage when shooting gets negated if you can barely lift your arms to boob level
"if they're really tall maybe that's why they don't need to lift their arms"
terrain can be asymmetrical you wanna be able to aim up. it's important lol
i know in lore and gameplay space marines never go prone, but standing/kneeling is a thing so
is there art of space marines assaulting up something
like a hill lol
what the fuck does that look like
hey maybe not! but they're not assaulting up a hill, they're dying on it xD
but still it's a more top down shot of some of these marines
i like how the only guy even remotely sort of aiming is in the bottom left, sliding on his ass and leaning back so that his bolter almost lines up with his actual eyes
it must be so easy to fight against a space marine's in melee since like 180 degrees are prohibited from them lol
can't attack from above. can't defend against above
no wonder genestealers hard counter them
they're tall with long arms tho
prolly helps. against like, a normal sized human
still fucked against anything even near your height and arm length
space marine aggression probably a detriment here, they wanna charge in
but if you are taller/have longer reach you actually want to keep them at range (that's literally your advantage)
trying to wind up big attacks and wade in is literally playing into your smaller opponents' advantage
so 🤷🏼
is stuff like kendo big in the uk?
wonder what that conversation was like if it occurred xD
i just realized something even worse
space marines are really wide in lore right. like shoulder width
so their shoulder joints are even farther out than i was thinking
they REALLY can't fucking move in that shit lololol
"space nuns have overtly sexualized power armor"
me, after some thought: "the boob armor is geometrically not ideal, but it does seem like that can actually move in the armor so"
they have a similar problem where if their arms are at their sides they can't lift their arms up at their sides, same as space marines
but because gw decided BIG PAULDRONS ARE MANLY SMALL PAULDRONS ARE FEMININE it means they accidentally designed more functional armor lololol
there are some space nun designs (illustrations, not sure about minis/models) where some of them have some kinda of... maybe tube thing? running on either side of their necks. almost like a big collar
that would be a problem tho. probably. you might still be able to get your gun up but you might have to like, sort of splay your arms outward and then inside to loop your pauldron edge around it
would be very awkward. but at least physically possible without clipping through your brain
like this. the lady in the middle looks like she might have a problem
the two women lower in the foreground look like it'd be annoying but much more doable
yeah i dunno what those tubes are but they seem to be some sort of rank-correlated thing
more good == less functional armor xD
medieval knights do actually look cool you know
and even in the times when real knights did not use firearms, their pauldrons did not interfere much with moving your arms up in front of you, and sideways
you didn't need to make the pauldrons so ridiculous in front
space marines: *getting shanked in their armpits and other weak points*
me: "why don't you use rondels"
it's a little weird how they didn't use faulds for the sob
it looks modern/stereotypically feminine, like a skirt, but is also historically/aesthetically on point for functional knight armor
they also have those repentia or whatever but they don't even wear armor
so. yeah
lololol i saw some art of a space dwarf with a sword held above his head... but the perspective is literally done so his pauldron is hidden on that arm
looooooooooololol
just imagining that artist drawing that out and being like "wait, what?"
it's even worse because his torso is twisted slightly which would make his whatever on his back clip through his shoulder too
