“Blah blah people are still on Twitter for no good reason,” says the non-black person fitting into this white-ass space with the utmost of ease.
@ThisPlaceAgain
without an algorithm to suggest content it’s a bit hard at first to get engagement and find the people you want to follow. I suggest searching for and following hashtags and special interest instances that you’re into.More and more people are coming each day.
@ThisPlaceAgain I'm not black, but I wouldn't say I've fitted into this space with ease. twitter was disgusting, but there was much more interaction on it.
@ThisPlaceAgain Sad so many PoC can't feel at home here. Hopefully some instances are better than others here.
@ThisPlaceAgain how can it change? How can we change it? What can I do ? Does this vary from instance to instance? Is this typical of the greater fediverse, or just mastodon?
@OldAndCranky I don’t really know. I’m not that smart. I’m only good for complaining and eating enchiladas.
@ThisPlaceAgain @OldAndCranky I've been trying to listen to as many voices in the community as I can to get answers to that question. These are the things I've heard most often (I'm open to correction/expansion):
Better moderation to protect BIPOC voices
Stop asking BIPOC voices to hide/censor for the sake of the Fediverse 'vibe'
Better tools to help find one another and build community (QTs, community trends, groups, etc.)
I'm sure there's more?

@ThisPlaceAgain @OldAndCranky It’s definitely the fediverse (Open Social Web), & just that Masto is the biggest sw on it.
And it’s purely a cultural issue. I’ve found it’s very Eurocentric (and therefore REALLY white adjacent) but with a dose of “well, we don’t have racism the way the US does” smugness.

How to fix it is sadly above this YT boys pay grade. Mostly it’s about not tolerating intolerance and listening to BIPOC folks. Which sure SOUNDS like it should be easy….

@ThisPlaceAgain That ol' white privilege again. We don't have to build a space for ourselves, it just automatically is.

A couple of interesting Black Americans I follow are
@Uneek and @StillIRise1963

@devinprater @ThisPlaceAgain People keep pointing out that Mastodon isn't very inviting for black people and that there's a lot of racism here, but the only mentioning of black people I've ever seen here is people pointing out that Mastodon isn't very inviting for black people. I've never seen anyone even hint towards the idea that black people aren't welcome here. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but if you want people to see that it's an issue, you have to site your sources.
@dangero @devinprater This place will never change, because it’s ppl like you who can’t read deeper than the surface. Just because you don’t see ppl yelling “n*****” 24/7 doesn’t mean it’s inviting. Are you actually listening to what black ppl are saying? Because I’ve heard there’s been numerous convos on this long before I got here. There’s a reason black ppl aren’t here. It ain’t just a fluke.
@ThisPlaceAgain Post 1/4: I can sympathize, because I am also part of a minority group. I know all too well what discrimination feels like and how it can present itself. But I also know that a lot of people don't know about the issues we have to deal with. Any time I encounter some form of discrimination, I do my best to explain the problem and how I think we can fix it. I admit I'm not always on the ball with that, but I know that it's my responsibility to provide as much context as I can.
@ThisPlaceAgain Post 2/4: Context is paramount. Most people aren't going to read my posts and decide to take time out of their day to look everything up themselves because I didn't give enough context. Most people scroll through their feed, go "Oh, that's interesting", boost/favorite, and continue scrolling through posts. Providing links will entice people to click and read. Most of my knowledge about certain topics comes from me clicking on the links people provide.
@ThisPlaceAgain Post 3/4: I admit I'm not the greatest at providing the necessary context to get people to take action. You know what I don't do though? What you just did. I asked you if you could give me the sources you got your info from, and instead of doing that so I can be more educated on the issue, you took to finger pointing. Phrases like "People like you" really don't help your case. Rather, it's a fantastic way to get most people to block you and never listen to what you have to say.
@ThisPlaceAgain Post 4/4: The reason I'm making multiple posts is because my instance has a 500 character limit. I know this was a pretty long series of posts, but I hope it encouraged you to stop and think about the way you go about this advocacy thing. I'm not trying to chastise you; I'm trying to help you. I really hope you take this to heart.
@dangero @ThisPlaceAgain The inviting thing is unquestionably in the eye of the new person. The “a lot of racism here” charge really could do with some cited examples, particularly of reported posts kept up, still offending.
@wndlb @dangero I’ve never mentioned a racism issue, but I have mentioned the lack of diversity. It’s why I try to suggest following black ppl. I’ve also mentioned the lack of pop culture. That’s it.
@ThisPlaceAgain @wndlb I don't know any black person on Mastodon besides one, and I follow him already.
@dangero @ThisPlaceAgain Dan, meet this place again...
@wndlb @ThisPlaceAgain Yes, I would like to meet you and understand more about you and your struggles, so I'll follow you both.
@ThisPlaceAgain @dangero It's not just few discussing #KendrickLamar; few discuss #harrystyles either. The generic poster, for better or worse, is, in some form, a coder, and not just as a hobby.
@wndlb @dangero This is what I need to get through my head. I seem to forget the demo.

@ThisPlaceAgain @wndlb @dangero

As a white nerd, I really want that demo to change.

I couldn't stand to be on Twitter any longer, but the smaller number of people, the lack of diversity, and the fact that you have to seek stuff out instead of having it brought to you (yes, I miss "the algorithm", much to my surprise) make Mastodon a second-tier substitute.

The only recc I have to make is "start following a bunch of hashtags". That might prime the pump.

@ThisPlaceAgain @dangero I do think that that median demo says something: they are the ppl who do know when it is time to get out of, in this case, the Dodge of social media.

@dangero

Dan --

Mesha's source is personal experience. You're *literally* asking her to point to the messages her attackers left her.

If you don't believe that Mastodon can be dangerous, google for "Mastodon blocked instances". There are many lists of them. Then choose one or several, and look through the public posts on those servers.

Then ask yourself: if these are the public posts that anyone, not logged in, can see, what would they write in private? Imagine that they were attacking you instead.

@Chip_Unicorn I understand. Give me a few minutes, I'll get back to you.

@ThisPlaceAgain @dangero @[email protected]

Oh, and maybe you've already gotten there, but I block much more freely here.

I used to feel bad about it, like i was insulting the other person, but look at this person here: they're not taking your word for your experience! I've decided that if i wouldn't enjoy hanging with you in real life, why am I spending my on-line energy on you?

@ThisPlaceAgain sorry you're going through this. You're right, there have been numerous convos on this for a loooong time, @shengokai's "The Whiteness of Mastodon" talks about this in more detail.

@dangero
Dan, if somebody says they feel unwelcome and you don’t see why, the correct reaction is not to demand that they cite their sources.

The correct reaction is to ask yourself what you’re missing, and go do your own work.

Demanding labor from somebody in distress isn’t just rude; it’s harmful.

I don’t know how to break this to you, but…you are the asshole here.

@inthehands Paul, I come from a minority community where I have to give out free education to everyone I come across. When I used to be out in about, I would have people talking to me like a child, grab onto me, push me, pull me by my cane like a dog on a leash, and generally treat me like a lesser being. You know what I have to do every single time? Educate people. I have to explain to people what happened to me, why it's wrong, and how it can be corrected. I have to fight for my human rights.
@dangero @inthehands Dan I am genuinly sorry this happens to you. The problem here is, that those people are in the wrong for behaving like that. Not the other marginalized person who is not willing to do the same as you do.
@dangero @inthehands also, there is a difference between discrimination (which you experience) and racism. Both are not ok and hurtful, but racism runs deeper.
I don't know if it is available in english but there is an interactive book Exit racism by german author Tupoka Ogette. She also does wonderful work on instagram which has the german and english version.

@dangero

Do you think this reply constitutes being welcoming?

@dangero @devinprater @ThisPlaceAgain

So, it's been made clear how this response is part of the problem.

But to add my understanding (being white and all) on how you're confused and missing the point. Mastodon is like the suburbs but with no street lights and a curfew and no one has a car. We mostly just kinda hangout with our neighbours. You have close to no idea what is actually going on in the house down the street let alone a few blocks away or across town.

What if every black person in your city is getting abused every other night ... would you know about it? First hand? Maybe if they lived on your street, but a few blocks away, down the main road, across town? Nope. Only by word of mouth, or as you might interpret it, unsubstantiated rumour. And even then, most things you won't even hear about.

That's what's happening here ... stuff goes down, people leave and no hears about it.

@dangero @[email protected] @ThisPlaceAgain

When I see out the window that it's raining, I don't bother stepping outside to verify that it's wet. I've got years of experience that I've learned from.

When I hear a black American say that they felt unwelcome somewhere, I don't demand they produce evidence. I've got years of experience that I'm (finally) learning from.

@dangero @devinprater @ThisPlaceAgain Go and search Mekka Okereke’s pinned posts ( @mekkaokereke ) No one will do the work for you- please go and search. And in the meantime you can also complain why full text search is not working here- bc that could have helped you or already.
Or you could just simply point at yourself being an absolute dick and asking for “sources”.

Can not wait for the QTs, to be honest.

@dangero @[email protected] @ThisPlaceAgain NGL, if I were black, I’d have blocked your ass from this post alone, much less the 3-4 more posts trying to justify you doing exactly what you’ve had done to you as a blind person.

To be crystal damn clear, I am YT and I’ve seen plenty of examples of this (not counting yours, which just goes on the pile) and I’ve only put a LITTLE effort into it.
“Cite your sources” JFC.

Do your gdammed research.

@dangero Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. You said this yourself and then had the gull to essentially say "prove it!" The burden isn't on her to prove her own feelings. You could have kept scrolling, but yet you went out of your way to be a "reply guy." This happens so much here specifically on Mastodon that it's sickening. So here I am replying to you hoping you get it.

Having a disability doesn't give you a free pass to be an asshole to others.

@dangero @devinprater @ThisPlaceAgain

This was fortold by the *prophet!

*Comic artist Nathan Pyle.

@dangero @devinprater @ThisPlaceAgain

Mesha, I'm glad you're here. You don't owe anyone receipts for the anti-Blackness of Mastodon. People like me have collected tons of receipts, and they don't even look for them.

Instead, know that people are making changes to Mastodon, from a technical, but more importantly, human aspect, to make it less anti-Black. But it will take us time.

And if it's still too much, or we move too slow, you don't owe anyone your time and effort to fix this place.

@mekkaokereke @dangero @devinprater I kindly thank you, Mekka 🙏🏿

@dangero @devinprater @ThisPlaceAgain

"My experience is X" says the black/trans/gay/whatever person.

"That's funny, I don't have that experience in my mainly white, cis, male feed; you must be wrong" says the white cis man

🤦‍♂️

Here's the thing: when someone, here, or in the "real world", says their experience is X, believe them! You can't possibly know what they've experienced, so questioning it, asking them to prove it, is demeaning them. Period.

We. Have. To. Do. Better.

@ThisPlaceAgain Every time someone says the Fediverse is like young Twitter I agree — very white and male, focused on the gee whiz of tech.

@ThisPlaceAgain
As an autistic person, I don't always know what to say, and afraid of saying something wrong too.
I do know the feeling of being unwanted or ignored.

Sometimes I make the mistake of thinking that I know what other people think ...because I am not them, and sometimes I make wrong decisions because of that.

There are so many bad people everywhere.
People have to earn my trust now, while that used to be the other way around. But never forget there are good people everywhere too.

@ThisPlaceAgain you can’t blame the whole fediverse or all of mastodon for the people they attract and keep. Keep in mind that it started in Germany where many people are not black. Like with all non-majorities, you need to make it work by finding the right people and subjects to make it interesting enough for you to stay. If you miss content, make it. Also, what someone else said: you might find other instances with more diversity. In short: I hope you will feel at home and enjoy this.
@PJMirella Did I blame Mastodon for its lack of diversity, or did I simply state a fact? I’m not blaming anybody. It is what it is.
@ThisPlaceAgain I don’t know for sure it’s a fact, without data. Personal experiences can vary. I follow more white people but not exclusively, and of many I don’t even know what they look like. Same with cis/hetero people vs lhbtiq+, and left-wing vs right-wing. Personally I think my mastodon circle is more diverse than my work or living environment.
@ThisPlaceAgain I know people ‘here’ at least try and be nice to each other, and it’s all over the app, in details like using content warnings and adding text to pictures. Also, with hashtags you can find and create all the content you are looking for. Twitter feeds on hatred nowadays, Mastodon on love. And nothing stops you from using both.
