@mustapipa Many moons ago the Ontario Science Centre had a film that scaled through this, then zipped back to human scale and started going smaller, down to the subatomic level. It was one of the best pieces of science communication I have ever encountered.

@alan @mustapipa
Is this what you saw? I remember it at the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, USA. I sat and watched it at least 3 times until my parents dragged me away (hey, that's about 30 minutes!). I expect it was in many different museums.

Here's an updated one. Faster, slicker, but missing the narration.

Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of ...

The wonderful CGP Grey did a similar video recently called Metric Paper. Seems like it's a recurring theme.

@valen @alan @mustapipa with Webby out there taking pics now, we'll have to update this video again soon!
@valen @alan @mustapipa and lmao, one single space video, and YouTube already is recommending some of the black-and-white-iconed clickbait misinformation science channels, complete with a Kaku. Sorry YouTube, but I know better!
@shadyspotlight @valen @mustapipa Watch 10 seconds, hit dislike, go for the next, repeat until you just can't bear it. Bury them.
@alan @valen @mustapipa I think the general preference is to report them, but that takes time and more inclination. Plus there's no telling what the algorithm would do with all those clicks!
@mustapipa I can recommend finding names on this map like ‘Boötes Void’ and looking them up to get a dose of cosmic scale vertigo. TIL there’s an area described as a void because it has fewer than 200,000 galaxies in it.
@daveparry @mustapipa Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.

"Yes indeed, I have a new plan, for all of you. A plan of hope. A plan of adventure. A plan of such extraordinary magnitude as to take the breath, and challenge the senses, of all who would consider it. A plan to bind our common people in hope, and finally free our conscience for noble purpose.

I propose that in the next three decades we at last end the scourge of human disease upon this Earth, and begin the inevitable adventure of humanity's migration beyond it."
SearingTruth, A Future of the Brave, 2005

@cristian hola! hola! mira! mira!  THAT PICTURE IS COOL!!
@3tt hola👋😊 , si es genial la foto!
@mustapipa That is a stunning picture...I want a poster of this on my wall... except I'll need a bigger wall.... a much bigger wall... 😂

@craicer @mustapipa

Haha, thought the same! :)

@craicer @mustapipa I was thinking the same thing, 12ft high, at least! 😅😅
@mustapipa all it needs is a little "You are Here" sign.
@mustapipa Silly of me, but I can't help hearing the orchestral swells and dips of The Blue Danube when I see something this awesome.
@mustapipa it’s definitely anthropomorphizing a bit but it’s kinda neat how the far reaches of the universe depicted in this fashion almost resemble an organic matrix, like irises or bone marrow
@panegyr @mustapipa
Some sort of chaos/fractal mathematical thing, no doubt

@golgaloth

You know a Trekkie was involved when you spot Wolf 359

Socool.

@DavBot @mustapipa @golgaloth Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't see it first, but I found it.
@mustapipa loving this geocentric model 😉 Very cool graphic, know where I can get prints?
@mustapipa Voyager 1 still going strong
@mustapipa Nothing could've prepared me for clicking on that picture. HOLY CRAP 🤩🤩🤩
@mustapipa anyone have any info on the Giant Void neighborhood concerning their real estate climate and how good their public transportation system is? I feel like my people could be there. #timetomove

xkcd
@aweatherall Yes, that's a great one too!
@mustapipa I like how, somewhere near the top, the spatial location of things is overtaken in importance by their temporal location. If I had to poinpoint where in this graphic that switch happens, I think I'd say it's either Ereandel or "unreachable". I know we talk about looking back at galaxies throughout time, but, until you start talking baout those really early ones, we still tend to be more concerned with their location in space than when they were.
@mustapipa
Excellent map. Like looking back in time
@mustapipa
Here's a predecessor with the same design:

482: Height - explain xkcd

Explain xkcd is a wiki dedicated to explaining the webcomic xkcd. Go figure.

@mustapipa Pardon me, but I don't see where the Delta Quadrant is listed! What an oversight!
@mustapipa can I get that as a door poster?
@mustapipa Mon moi de 12 ans aurait tellement aimé avoir cette carte en poster dans sa chambre…
