You can now get a base-model Tesla Model 3 for $30,330 with the now-$7,500 federal tax credit and price markdowns. Say what you will about Tesla but you’re not going to find a better new car than that at such a price. Fantastic deal for a very good car.
@snazzyq The Toyota Prius starts at $27,450, has been around 20 years longer than the Model 3, has sold 5M more units than the Model 3, and is from a brand which has been around for 60 years longer than Tesla. And it is a hybrid, so doesn't need to rely on charging infrastructure.
@macsimcon @snazzyq I'm still not convinced, so tell me – does it burst into flames at inopportune times? That's the feature I'm looking for in a car.
@Mabande I was going to mention that, but it seemed argumentative…and Toyota has had issues with their cars accelerating out of control.
@macsimcon @Mabande It is not argumentative, but statistically proven the EVs are the least likely to have fires, ICE cars are at least 10X likelier to catch fire and Hybrid ICE cars are the likeliest of all to have fires. Look it up if you don’t believe me.
@TedTodorov @Mabande I believe you, I just think it’s a matter of exposed area. The entire bottom of a Tesla is batteries. A piece of debris punctures one and now you have a fire which cannot be extinguished without hundreds of gallons of water over many hours. This problem doesn’t occur with hybrid or ICE cars.
@macsimcon If it was a genuine problem, the statistics wouldn’t be so lopsided in EVs favor. Most EV batteries fires have happened due to battery defects (like the Chevy Bolt LG batteries (all Bolt’s were recalled and the recent Ford F-150 battery problem that caused them to halt manufacturing). The overall design is safe and works.
Yes, fire departments need to be trained in battery fires - part of the problem is there are too few of them. ICE fires: one of the many I saw on the NJ Turnpike:
@TedTodorov There aren’t enough EVs on the road to support this statement. When half the cars are EVs, and we haven’t seen a dramatic increase in battery fires, I’ll believe it.
