The same outward behavior can have different internal motivations and be very different because of them.

If you do something to avoid someone else getting on your case, is it fawning?

I think it's not fawning if you're fully aware of what's going on and making a conscious choice.

I think it is fawning if you're doing it as a reflexive stress response.

There may be even further nuance. What do you think?
