If Lemmy is not your cup of tea as an alternative to Reddit, maybe try open-source federated Kbin instead

Yes, Reddit is going through its own API pains right now, and of course it is anyway a centralised social network much like Facebook and Twitter. So the discussion around alternatives has been coming up again.

And it looks like @JungleGeorge24 was already there on #Kbin
@danie10 somebody said I'm collecting Fediverse accounts like infinity stones, I guess it's true 😅🤣
@JungleGeorge24 yep its an addiction. I'm trying to hold off on Kbin as I already had at Lemmy and Beehaw ;-)

@danie10 was just reading an interesting blog post about lemmy and kbin

On Reddit and Its Federated Alternatives - Jayeless.net

As you may have heard, Reddit’s decided to pull a Twitter and start charging an extortionate amount of money for access to their previously-free API, in order to drive third-party clients like Apollo and RIF into extinction. Under Reddit’s proposed pricing, …

@JungleGeorge24 interesting, yes Kbin has some good things going for it. Whilst Beehaw is nicer to be on than Lemmy, it does not allow new subreddits/magazines to be registered, has no downvotes, and does not have the blog concept Kbin has.

A top priority for #kbin imo should be better thumbnail display for images and embedding integrations. ✨️

Seeing much of the focus is on sharing and voting on content that originates elsewhere from other sites like Twitch, YouTube and more - it need to be fast, viewable, and enjoyable to scroll through.

Right now thumbnails are stretched and cropped which gives a bad viewing experience. A thing to note though, is that mobile #Reddit never ever perfected this and is a glitchy mess to this day on Android browsers unless you use their app.

@danie10 I'm confused how I can browse magazines from Mastodon? Or post to them?
@HeadPlug Kbin is on ActivityPub so there is federation. I was seeing Mastodon post on the microblogging view in Kbin (not on the Mastodon side). From Mastodon I think you'd have to just follow a Kbin profile, but you'll only see their posts, and not see actual Magazine views of topics. You can't subscribe to the Magazines as far as I know, just profiules with posts.
