This is how our government has been corrupted:

1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office
2) Elected officials rewrite rules in the donors' favor
3) Donors make huge profit
4) Repeat

We must get big money out of politics. It’s the root of all evil in Washington.

@rbreich We must get all private money out of politics. And that includes TV journalism ad money.
@rbreich no private funding of campaigns (allow volunteering labor) mandatory town halls/debates for candidates broadcast on public media (commercial media can also carry if they choose)
@rbreich and then people say the US is a democracy. They have been brainwashed very well.
@rbreich Honestly I think it is too late. So much money in the hands of so few, they control the economy with or without politicians in their pockets at this point.

@rbreich

On one hand, I think we've already lost.
On the other hand, we've weathered this before, transitioning from the Gilded Age to the Trustbusting Era.
On the third hand...wait...where did I put that third hand?

@rbreich if humans end up like the dinosaurs I think Mancur Olson’s theories about why small groups can organize more effectively than large groups might be the best explanation.
@rbreich The bigger question is how. All those that make the decisions are the ones benefitting from it. With money comes power. People don't give up power willingly.

@rbreich

Very much so. But I still imagine improvements...

For example, what if the judicial system had less politics in it? How about changing the Supreme Court so that nonpartisan Justices are at least slightly more powerful than partisans?

Funny historical joke time: Used to be that all the Justices were nonpartisan. RBG was the last one while Thomas is the leading example of a partisan Justice. Dare I say fake Justice?

Honest justice is blind, not partisan. It matters. A lot.

@rbreich
As long as we have political parties, "BIG MONEY" will have more influence than it deserves.

It's time for a new way.

#tiereddemocraticgovernance

@rbreich Do accomplish that we must get out of the supreme court that makes decisions to allow money in politics
@rbreich And it’s worse now in part because there is now less transparency. Prior big donors got what they wanted for current big donors: the cover of darkness.
@rbreich I totally agree, Robert!

@rbreich Yes, there is no decrease in military spending, but there is an increase in payback political campaign donations.

Say, let's not be fooled.

@rbreich plus the public has NO IDEA who the donors even are because Citizens United, and dark money PACs.

@rbreich

And when you distill it all down to one word, you get:

GREED

@bthalpin @rbreich only in washington? I think those last 2 words could be changed to one, "globally"
@rbreich Same in London. Something needs to change, and soon.

@rbreich

It’s the root of all evil in Washington too.

@rbreich
Political corruption and substandard pay for workers are the hallmark of a third world countries. Poverty for them and billions for us.

@Americanist4u @rbreich

So, the USA a third world country, right?

@Raven47 @rbreich
The seeds for one have been planted and it is gaining ground towards an outwardly functioning one. Look at income disparity, homeless crisis and a dying middle class.
@rbreich - Hard to see how that happens without a tumbril, but I agree theoretically.
@rbreich This is spot on. Common folk to get the votes. Grant favors to those who funded your campaign to get those votes.
@rbreich I mean, is it too ingrained now? Money has deep hooks. How could we possibly begin to pry it back at this point?
@rbreich “get big money out of politics” is a quaint idea . How does that happens when ALL politicians need big money to get elected? It’s the whole system. Systems don’t change themselves. They have to meltdown first.
@rbreich sadly true of many democracies including UK. The power of donors to lobby for self interest is self evident from the ultra-processed food on supermarket shelves, to the vaping products children now use and the powers landlords have over their tenants.
@rbreich There should be a maximum amount of money politicians are allowed to spend on campaigns, everyone the same amount.

@rbreich

You mean it's the root of all evil in the world.

Money is evil, and was created by the higher class in order to concrete their status as an upper class "member". The one who controls the money, controls the world.

@rbreich It's the root of all evil in capitalist countries.
@rbreich

Until we get big money out of the world there will never be popular representation again anywhere.

@rbreich

That is how capitalism works.

1) Money congregates to ever less people.
2) Rich people use their power (money) to buy media, economy, politics.
3) They push for policies/spread lies that make them even richer.
4.) They use the new money to oust competition and gather more money (power).

It's not even a question of the underlying political system since you see the same developments in autocracies.

Funnily Marx's idea seemed to be to let this spiral to continue to its extreme and then simply disown the few remaining rich capitalists for the sake of also benefitting from the advancements of capitalistic societies. Another fact why countries like China or USSR have never been real communist states.

But yeah, unless the world abolishes capitalism and replaces it with a nature-friendly, socially equal system, this civilization won't last that much longer.

@rbreich Citizens United 👎
@rbreich Not likely. The people who can decide to change the system ARE the system.
@rbreich you need to end "citizens united." You need to undo EVERYthing Reagan did.
@rbreich why has there never been an anti-lobby bill l so far?
Also third parties and preferential voting...
@rbreich overturning Citizens United is unbelievably paramount to fixing democracy and we need to make buying elections/using money to garner political favor should be a LIFE SENTENCE. No parole or time off and absolutely no right to vote or contribute to anything political ever again.

@rbreich

The US politics cycle of doom. My I suggest a bit complicated, but excellent documentary explaining it all.

@rbreich sounds like Tennessee Politics...
@rbreich
More and more, I'm coming to believe that money is the problem with everything. Everything around us is about money. Nearly everything would be better if we weren't constrained by the need for some people to make a profit. There are almost no public spaces anywhere that aren't, sooner or later, about money.
