Just a reminder that Clarence Thomas let a GOP megadonor take him on lavish trips, buy his mom's house and let her live there rent free, pay for his grandnephew to attend a private boarding school — all in secret until now.

How is he still on the Supreme Court?

@rbreich anyone else would've gotten yeeted out of their jobs and offices if they acted this way - regardless if public servant or corporate wageworker!
@rbreich Happy to see you posting here again. Please continue!!👍💯🤞
@rbreich Because Republicans have no integrity. We should impeach Clarence Thomas.
@rbreich The only way (literally the only way) Thomas could get impeached with a Dem in the White House is if he suddenly had a change of heart, and starting voting with the liberal block of Justices. Yeah, that'd do it.

@rbreich How is that no other justices have said a word about it?

Silence is complicity.

@rbreich Lifetime appointment with little to no oversight or ethics rules, that's how.
@rbreich
Let's also remember that the GOP front runner was also unanimously found guilty of sexual abuse *and* maliciously lying to demand the woman he assaulted ...and the GOP is doing nothing!

@rbreich

The goppers will not impeach, because they are jealous, and want to board the grift train.

Insanity. Addiction to money.

@rbreich Audio and video doesn't lie.
Liars running from justice do.
Checkmate.
Game over.
@rbreich it's called oligarchy, duh
@rbreich
The entire institution is corrupt. It needs to go.
@rbreich Ask the feckless Democrats in charge of the Judiciary Committee.
@rbreich
because whoever put him there is also responsible for who allows him to stay in office. . .

@rbreich

Good question. Very likely with an answer involving legality, ethics and morals and some measures of a lack thereof. Plus a lack of will to act by those in authority.

Vernacularly, loosely woven carpets can hide gross amounts of dirt until beaten well. Then it all comes out.

@rbreich The world watches as US #SupremeCourtCorruption doesn’t cause a ripple.

@rbreich

The easiest assumption is that a person vetted by the Senate, with a record in a profession that itself has an ethical standard, would remain true to the ethics of that profession.

We have been disabused of 2.5 of our assumptions:
One, that a member of the Supreme Court would remain true to ethics,
Two, that the Senate has a sense of propriety and discretion in whom they elevate to the Supreme Court,
And another .5 that they could find someone in the profession who already lacked ethics, and would willfully lie to the Senate under oath. And more than just one "someone." It's as if they're trying to find them, on purpose.

@rbreich Because the Founders never imagined anyone so corrupt. Also goes for President and Senate.

@rbreich

Mass corruption begets more corruption and that's what the #RepublicanParty wants. That, and total political chaos at the federal level.

@rbreich how has this not been the front page and the lead story on every national paper and on tv for the past 3 months?
@rbreich because there are no standards for which a Supreme Court justice can be disciplined for ethical violations, and no effective discipline to be had in any case. The only legal recourse is impeachment and that's never going to happen.
@rbreich SCOTUS is a complete fraud. Four radical and religious fanatics are not fit to judge anyone. The gop corrupt and criminalize everything.

@rbreich
Because Congress doesn't have the presence of mind to pass laws that require automatic removal of any federal judge for violating disclosure laws.

They delude themselves into believing they are honest and follow the laws faithfully, even though they clearly don't do that.

Yet those same federal judges (SCOTUS included) expect everyone else to abide by their rulings.

@rbreich how is he not under investigation?
@rbreich Easy. They are in their positions for life or until they choose to retire. Impeachment/removal requires 67 senators—the chances for that are somewhere between zero and negative infinity.

@rbreich

Oh well. You are living through the late 1980s in SFRY - dissolvment of a waning secular worldview, its destruction and replacement with an appripriate kind of Christian fascism. And there is nothing one can do about emerging chaos. A brewing and stewing war.

Wish there is somewhere Billy Clinton to get BJ from an intern to make something shitty like Dayton Accords to look good in re-elections to pause "ancient hatred."

Gruß aus Bosnia.

@rbreich Because it's so shocking, so disturbing, that civilized people are stunned into inaction.

Not that it happened intentionally in this case, but the right-wing makes use of this mechanism regularly. You can get away with things that are so shocking that people don't know how to act, so they do nothing.

@rbreich He's still on SCOTUS because Mitch McConnell is still in the senate.
@rbreich Ethics is only for those who are against you and not for you. GOP AKA Party of Trump values disloyalty, dishonor, lying, screwing the next person and using people for their own benefit. Sane for extremists from the left. Both Left and Right do so and screw us.

@rbreich

I think it's time to ask more questions about the court itself, Thomas is just a (terrible) symptom.

@rbreich

John Roberts - *what* a disappointment, I can't think of a single issue he has helped me understand, or a single decision from his court that demonstrated any courage.

@rbreich wayyyyy beyond activist court status. Look how normalized their corruption is. Unreal.

@rbreich Is Clarence Thomas the most corrupt justice in US history? If so, we should refer to him as such. Every time his name is mentioned.

(I know…that probably still won’t lead to the impeachment he deserves, but maybe it can somehow move the needle in the direction toward some kind of accountability.)

@rbreich how is it that there aren't any checks and balances for the Supreme Court at all? They are NOT the law and neither are they above it
@rbreich
But is it not strange that there is no longer any conversation about his complicity in treason and sedition?

@rbreich

It's OK If You're Republican
