A lot could be said about this, but note how the GOP once again has no pretense to any form of responsible governing. In terms of the federal deficit—the thing they pretended to care about—this is a hodgepodge of bad policy ideas that will have a trivial impact on federal debt.
@maxkennerly I just wish Dem members were more willing to exploit the madness and make responsible gov °the° issue in the next campaign.
@maxkennerly 2 things:
1. The IRS cuts will increase the deficit
2. Cutting spending may very well increase the deficit too. Because spending causes other spending, etc via the multiplier effect. So spending causes increases in tax revenue.
@maxkennerly I feel like insisting on underfunding the irs is such a huge tell re protecting those who have the means to dodge taxes.

@maxkennerly

And, in some cases, make it worse in the long term.

@maxkennerly This deal is a win for the Republicans, which was inevitable given they hold the purse in the House. But will extremist Republicans be too stupid to accept the win?

An unmitigated loss for good governance, for the poor, and for containing climate change.

@maxkennerly 1 day of billionaire tax cuts >> impact of tightening work benefits
@maxkennerly Yes, but <10% of the Democratic Senate caucus wanted to *ensure* that a hodgepodge of bad policy ideas were implemented as part of a nonsensical scheme to monitor federal debt by holding the entire economy at gunpoint every few years. And so that is what we must do, and be grateful that it isn’t worse.
@maxkennerly I think I saw Josh Marshall say it’s basically what the GOP probably would have gotten in budget negotiations a few months from now, which is about how I read it
@maxkennerly
There are no policy wonks in the GOP anymore, only political hacks, who are wrong even on that at least as often as they are right.
@maxkennerly they're skipping over due process.
@maxkennerly It’s all for show. They will claim that they have vanquished Biden.Their followers will eat it up and regurgitate the lie.
@maxkennerly The gop have no idea what Americans need or how to make anything better, like health care, infrastructure, and trade. All they want is power and to please the rich.
@maxkennerly does anyone have standing to file a lawsuit questioning the debt ceiling law’s constitutionality once the deal is agreed to or passed?
