Listening to the DeSantis announcement/interview on Twitter. The whole thing -- both his prepared remarks and the subsequent interview -- is pretending that DeSantis is already in the general election running against Biden.

The question should be: “We know your message against Biden. What’s your message to Republican primary voters who today overwhelmingly support Trump?” That's the only question.

@gruber I'm seeing DiSantis not as a realistic bet against Trump in the primaries, rather a long-shot but not-crazy bet that Trump flames out due to health or legal problems, leaving the field more open - in that scenario, honing the anti-Biden message is rational.

@gruber it's totally implausible that any of these losers can win without directly confronting Trump, yet nobody— including DeSantis— will do it. I doubt they have a plan or if they do, can execute it face to face, on live TV. It's going to be Trump, whether we want him or not. And I definitely do not.

@gruber I do not think there is anything he can say to core Trump supporters to sway them. They are fanatics. Biden must continue to govern from the center in order to sway independents and sane Republicans.

@gruber DeSantis is running only because Trump might falter, healthwise or otherwise. He is not even pretending to fight Trump.

Democrats should have an excellent second candidate too, just in case. It's crazy that the RFK-JR dude is coming second in the Democratic race.

@proximacentauri If something happened to Biden, a bunch of Dems could mount campaigns quickly. Bernie, Warren, Buttigieg even. And of course Harris, who for better or worse would likely be the favorite.
