My fellow cis Americans, I want you to look at this map. Really look at it. And I want you to imagine what it would feel like if those red states were threatening you and your family. Because, ultimately, they are.

This is what creeping fascism looks like. It will harm ALL OF US. And it will take all of us, together, to fight it.

We don't sacrifice people. We stand with our trans siblings. When their rights are threatened, all our rights are threatened.

May Anti-Trans Legislative Risk Map

The map of anti-trans risk has polarized into two Americas - one where trans people have full legal protections, and one where they are persecuted by the state.

Erin In The Morning
@fraying Welp, now I know where I might plan a vacation…or not!
@jaredwhite @fraying Happily, I live in one of the safest states, Hawaii, and immediate family mostly live in California, which is also quite safe for #trans folks. Even though I'm cis, I do not want to aid and abet fascism, and will not be visiting the unsafe states till their laws change.
@BruceMirken @fraying Same here, I myself am not trans, but I cannot abide the horrible rhetoric and hateful actions taken by the powerful.

@jaredwhite @fraying Or even which states you can safely have a layover en route to your vacation. Because you might have to use an airport bathroom and get arrested for not knowing the local laws about which one you’re allowed to do your business in.

These are not things that people should have to be worried about in a supposedly free society!

@fraying It's not just fascism; it's christo-fascism. Its adherents must be punished.
@lednabm I think obsession with punishment is what caused this mess in the first place. @fraying

@alan @fraying

True, but reTHUGliCONs interpret the law only to advantage. Democrats wax philosophically on it, pretending justice is blind in a system where it clearly is not.

@lednabm @fraying Oh, I'm not saying voting will fix this, nor that violence will absolutely not ever be necessary at any point. But there's a difference between violence used out of love to defend others or yourself, and violence used to establish dominance and to inflict harm.
@fraying as an outside (UK based) I feel like every map of the US that's topic based looks like this, with a big swaith of "WTF" in the middle and stretching I to Florida.
@coldclimate @fraying The US has partitioned into Canada 2.0 and Jesusland.

@fraying I understand, because a friend of our family has a non-binary child and had to flee Florida for Massachusetts.

It's so vile.

@IronCurtain @fraying A friend of mine with a NB child fled Ohio for Michigan. My nibling works in Utah and I have no idea what they're planning. Won't be long before we all know someone in that position.
@fraying on the bright side, we have them completely surrounded.
@fraying would love to see dame map for europe
@fraying they are threatening my family
@emc2 I’m so sorry. Stay safe.
@fraying Thanks. I'm safe, but worried about the people I care about.

@fraying I’m currently 19 and in Ohio. Gender affirming care as a minor saved my life and I have bottom surgery coming up in a few months.

What happens when the unthinkable happens and my access to hormones is restricted? There’s no world where I can go back to before. I can’t live that way again. I won’t do it.

Please, keep your trans friends and family close, let them know you’ll fight for them and believe their fears. Nobody deserves to have their lives ripped away by hate.

@AmandaGay081321 hang in there, Amanda. You are valid. You are important. You deserve better than this. And this stranger is fighting for you from afar.
@fraying
The part of the U.S. where I feel safe traveling has shrunk to less than half the country.

@fraying These red states are harming my family. Coincidentally these red states are also where my family votes.

:(

@chadgeidel having difficult conversations with family is one way those of us not in those states can help.

@fraying It's tough to have to explain that "no, abortion isn't actually murder but preventing women from getting health care is" to people who won't listen to anyone but their pastor.

Including a very close female relative who is actually a former RN.

This will most likely be effecting my travel plans going forward.
@fraying @siracusa It feels/looks very lonely here in Illinois.
@fraying glad my state is blue on this map
@gavinisdie @fraying won't be for very long
@Leroy @fraying I hope it's proven wrong, but I can understand why you'd say that (mine is light blue)
@gavinisdie @fraying it won't be proven wrong. Too many people will say "oh it's just the red states" and make a bunch of excuses until it's in their areas too and by then it'll be too late and the whole damn country will put on its best Nazi Germany cosplay (which is "funny" because the Nazis were basically just cosplaying the US)
@fraying There are many terrible anti-trans proposals that need to be called out. Listing a state as having the “worst active anti-trans laws” because they restrict trans women from full participation in interscholastic women’s sports only gives the real atrocities cover.
@rvcx so we’re quibbling with the color coding in the face of a genocide? That helpful ya think?
@fraying I’m “quibbling” with turning an important issue into one purely of tribal identity, where all nuances are erased for the sake of political signaling. Alienating everyone who cares about the viability of competitive female sport is not the way to build a coalition.

@fraying Planning to do some travel this summer to #scuba dive and I’m actively avoiding Florida specifically due to their anti-trans/LGBTIA+ stance.

Also proud that Illinois is on the opposite side of the spectrum!

@fraying It just keeps getting worse :(
> Because, ultimately, they are.

Disagree.
@fraying Also every state with an abortion ban! Any woman with pregnancy complications is at risk of dying or being treated like a criminal instead of getting medical care.
@CharleneTeglia it’s a TERF move to change any conversation about trans issues to be about women in general. If you’re a TERF, please let me know so I can block you. If not, allow others to share the spotlight. Thanks.
@fraying not a coincidence that this map closely resembles 2020 election results.
@fraying No one has civil rights if ANYONE doesn’t have civil rights!
@fraying the sad thing is these states have tens of millions of people who couldn't give a damn what you wear or what bathroom you use but hate mongering neo-fascists who don't represent them or the majority of voters co-opted this wedge issue to try and distract people from their complete inability to govern or do anything but stoke FUD and hate.
Is the next Civil War going to be called the War of Middle States aggression?
@fraying @siracusa the thread may have gotten taken over by a bot account. I’m not sure but, hey, let’s find out! I actually do live in Alabama. I think people that disagree with the AL Gov should stay here and vote so we can make things better here. https://goodpeoplevote.org/
Good People Vote

Let's take charge of the civic process and change the culture of voting together.

Good People Vote
@robertbrodrecht @fraying @siracusa Ultimately one has to decide whether it is tolerable to pay into a system that refuses to use those funds for the benefit of the payer or in service to their values. Because that is what happens every year until success or mass abandonment of the effort. It is a hard thing to vote year after year and never once pick a winner, even for municipal broom-pusher or county dogcatcher.
@log thanks for your feedback? I just want non-Republicans to vote more in the state I live in
@log FWIW, we have a shit ton of trees in Alabama. From what I’ve heard, the regrow outpaces harvesting

@fraying

I am in a blue state I will do anything I can for my brothers and sisters who are being menaced by the RedHat Fascists.

From listening or kind and encouraging words to a stop on an Underground Railroad.

@fraying If a state isn’t safe for trans people it’s not a place I’m willing to visit.

@fraying It's never a bad time to remember Pastor Martin Niemöller's words.

<<<First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
...
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me>>>

This time it's trans people. This is where the fight is, and fight we must before it's too late.

@fraying there are SO MANY THINGS wrong with the states highlighted in your map. I wonder if there’s some term that could be used to bring together the … I don’t know, maybe the “intersection” (?) of all the things that are wrong with states where the majority are gerrymandered into being on the wrong side of history.
@kmmfoo stop generalizing. This post is about trans rights.
