Kindly asking people to STFU with defenses of Target that are like, "They're just trying to keep their employees safe!" Because this will only encourage more attacks.
@parkermolloy just like when I pay the mugger who says, ‘your money or your life’ that’s the end of the story. I’m now a savvy job creator. /s

@parkermolloy

What does one expect when a certain cohort says with one side of their mouth that they do not negotiate with terrorists, yet one of their heroes notably DID negotiate with terrorists only to have a bunch of American soldiers be killed in Beirut because the terrorists were emboldened by said negotiations?

@parkermolloy And the outrage was entirely fabricated from the ground up. No company is making "tuck friendly" kids swimwear. The whole thing is so fucked and Target did the exact wrong thing.
@parkermolloy Man, Target is always one of the biggest contributors to Twin Cities pride events, their branding is *everywhere.* I don't generally expect better from big companies, but this is absolutely cowardly and they better respond quick
@parkermolloy Also, if I saw a swimsuit marked "tuck friendly" I'd assume it meant, like, for wearing with other articles of clothing. Did anyone bother to check the marketing for the swimsuit maker, or is this just gender critical brain worms seeing vicious transes everywhere?

@parkermolloy Any time you give a far-right person who is powerless in their own lives a victory, no matter how minor, you only encourage them to escalate their attacks, putting others at even more risk.

#Target if you have issues with someone causing a disturbance in your stores about your #pride display, ask them to leave. If they refuse to do so immediately, call the police and have them trespassed for life. If they make terroristic threats against your stores or staff, press charges.

@parkermolloy

Make sure the police know their actions were directly motivated by your #pride display making it a bias-motivated attack aka a #hatecrime

@parkermolloy @almondtree If I’m that manager I surround all the cheap beer, the tubs of pork rinds and beef jerky — with Pride items.

@parkermolloy

Surely, if we reward the bad behaviour of these violent reactionaries by giving them exactly the thing they're demanding this time, it'll end there!

Right?
🙄

@tunguska @parkermolloy at this point in history, any posture on the sort of topics in question would incite a violent reaction. Physical or rhetorical.

@yaitorr @parkermolloy

Yep, and as history has taught us, "appeasement" as a strategy against fascists leads only to an ever-escalating cycle of (actual, not just rhetorical) violence/demands/violence/demands that will consume the entire world unless/until they *are stopped* by sufficiently vigorous and widespread opposition.

@tunguska @parkermolloy I agree. However, Corporate America will not be sufficiently incentivized to be leaders of any cultural change, and we're spending too much energy holding them to that standard. We should be in the “glass half-full" stance with them than the alternative.

@yaitorr @parkermolloy

I think you're reading a lot into my response, to be honest.

I just think sending a high-profile message to violent reactionaries that says effectively "hey, we're super receptive to threats and violence; you should use that against us more, because it'll get exactly the result you want" is not smart on any level, no matter who you are.

@tunguska @yaitorr And, based on some of the stuff I'm seeing in right wing media today, they're taking this as a big sign of success and telling their supporters to push harder.
@parkermolloy @tunguska Yeah, you’re right. Sorry that I went off-topic. At the time of posting, I was mad about the amount of vitriol in some other posts, and I projected some of that in my writing. Target did wrong; societies must not negotiate with terrorists.
@yaitorr @tunguska and just for the sake of putting this out there, here's a sample of how the right reaponded to Target caving to them https://www.mediamatters.org/charlie-kirk/charlie-kirk-encourages-his-audience-bankrupt-target-selling-pride-merchandise

@parkermolloy @tunguska

🤮🤮🤮

Ok, I can see now why people can be furious about this. Especially those that are the main target behind these sorts of vomit inducing campaigns.

@parkermolloy well, I emailed [email protected] and asked them to reconsider their actions. Not sure it’ll help, but the dodgers reversed a decision after pressure, so who knows? I at least feel a little better letting them know how disappointing they’re being.
@vizaezuul @parkermolloy Call your local franchise and tell them what you like as well
@parkermolloy if they want to keep employees safe then they should hire more security and hit anyone who threatens employees with a lifetime ban from the store and trespassing charges
@savaran @parkermolloy or, hell, even allow employees to concealed carry and not fire them for defending themselves, like, that's a bare minimum
@parkermolloy “Nice store you have there. Would be horrible if something happened to it.” I thought we had laws in the country to protect people from criminals. Oh yes, I forgot. Republicans do not need to obey the law. Fascism for the win!
@parkermolloy the idea that union busting corporations are trying to protect their workers is laughable
@parkermolloy @BrentInMasto They can hire security guards, ban people who are throwing fits over products that’s are lgbtq friendly and put their pics up front like shoplifters 🤷‍♂️
@voron @parkermolloy This plus film their tantrums, go viral, identify them, and contact employers
@voron @parkermolloy Still I DO have sympathy for any employees that have to deal with this nonsense. The perpetrators of this stochastic terrorism are the ones that are to blame, but the employer should be doing more to protect from such harassment
@BrentInMasto @parkermolloy As do I, I suspect anyone who has worked retail or customer service does. The fact remains management has the power to make frontline employees safer without folding to threats

@parkermolloy Target made a stupid decision,

And yet I'm calling mine to make sure they don't buckle here, and thank them.

@parkermolloy As someone said on another thread, Target don't have any problem banning shoplifters, they should just ban people who don't want to support the LGBT community.
@SusanLewis @parkermolloy really we all should
@darwinwoodka @parkermolloy Obviously they can't ban people for holding an opinion, but people who make threats to staff and other customers, show them the door!
@parkermolloy I feel like Target would have fewer settlements with OSHA, if they wanted to keep employees safe, but that's just me.

@parkermolloy

Target is dead to me.
No. Make that…
Target is dead to my immediate family and me.

@parkermolloy Doesn’t Target also give a large amount of money to anti-abortion groups?
@parkermolloy I imagine that anybody who knows anyone who has worked at Target knows the company really dgaf about its employees
@parkermolloy For the sake of Canadians of all kinds, given this context, I'm grateful that Target left Canada before it came to this point of #ObedienceTest passage on their part.

@parkermolloy THIS. And as I've repeatedly said - they can easily handle this. Imagine how fast this nonsense would stop if it was organized shoplifting.

That they're bowing to fascists is a choice.
