Hello Fediverse.

Today we’re announcing the addition of PixelFed and Bluesky to our social web integrations on Flipboard.

Now you can see posts from Mastodon, PixelFed, Bluesky and, of course, Flipboard all in the same user experience. You can favorite, reply to, and boost any post. You can follow any user. You can explore any hashtag. And you can post text, photos and links to any timeline. Bluesky is available today for Flipboard on iOS and Android. PixelFed will be live in a few days.

Special thanks to @dansup for building @pixelfed and making it easy for developers to build with it. I also love that Pixelfed is 100% #ActivityPub based making it seamlessly interoperable with #Mastodon.

These beta API integrations provide an early glimpse into the interoperability possible on the social web as more services are built by developers. The next step is to integrate at the protocol level via #ActivityPub so that users of #Mastodon, @Pixelfed and #Flipboard can seamlessly follow and engage with each other.

While Bluesky does not yet use ActivityPub, they seem very committed to federation so I hope there will eventually be a way to resolve this.

@mike ok I’ll join @pixelfed then. I like the different content available for curation on these feeds. Thanks for exposing us Flipboard users to new publishing experiences.
@mike does Pixelfed have a Flipboard dedicated server or shall I pick a random one like pixelfed.social? #pixelfed #flipboard
@janettespeyer We don't yet have a dedicated pixelfed instance. I'm currently @mmccue.
@mike Cool Mike, do u use the Mastodon/Pixelfed API or ActivityPub endpoint?
@jan At the moment these are all API level integrations. We are integrating #ActivityPub to do a full protocol level integration in the coming months. Then users on Mastodon, Pixelfed and Flipboard will be able to seamlessly follow and engage with each other.
@mike
I tried it
1. it was really hard to find where in the app I log in
2. why do you need read and write permission to my account? Will trust you for now, but others won’t.

@pkreissel Yes, we need to make that easier to find once we exit beta.

Re: read/write access, that so you can post. At the moment I don't think there's a way to do more granular permissions with these APIs but I'll look into it.

@mike it should be possible. I tried it and most stuff requires less permissions. Also maybe you would like to steal some ideas from my project for ranking: https://github.com/pkreissel/foryoufeed

Apparently, there's a bug in the Android client as it seems to crash (on a Samsung S20+) when you put in mastodon.social as the instance.

Otherwise, great job!

@TNLNYC @mike @Flipboard Seems there is a bug and we are on it! Thanks for your patience.
@mike Love that you guys are doing this!

@mike .. and just like that, I lost all interest in Flipboard, the same way I am not interested in any platform that enables fascist techbros to spread their unmoderated and unblockable hate streams.

BlueSky? No thanks.

@starlily I understand your trepidation. I don't want to see fascist techbros either nor enable them with any magnification or reach.

As the social web grows, all services will need to focus on scalable moderation.

I've looked closely at Bluesky's approach to moderation and they've actually built some good things here that, if fused with the approach mastodon takes, could be a net positive for moderation for everyone.

All that said, these are two totally different networks for now.

@mike If you have looked closely, then you know you cannot block people there, only mute them. Leaving you entirely exposed to them while you see nothing.

That is not good moderation, that is target making. Pure idiocy.

@starlily Great point. I totally agree that there should be a two way block.
@mike before full ActivityPub, any chance we could see Calckey? 😇
@kainoa We've been looking at it. Not sure yet.
@mike awesome! If you need API docs, they're here: https://calckey.social/api-doc
Calckey API

@mike @kainoa Will be excited to see that feature happens!
@kainoa I'm on calckey.social and like the experience. Is the API comparable to the mastodon API?
@mike both yes and no Athough we do offer a very rudimentary Mastodon API compatibility layer, it's much better to use the Calckey API directly as it's missing many features. Given Calckey is a fork of Misskey, we did inherent some technical debt from them, especially regarding the API. It's not RESTful which is my biggest gripe, but overall it's not too hard to understand and there's many things about it that's analogous to the Mastodon API.
@kainoa I see. Very good to know. cc @greg
@mike @greg and if you ever have questions about anything, don't hesitate to ping or dm me :)
