Florida MAGA Gov Desantis is signing HB 7 to "ban teachers from making students feel guilt or shame about their race because of historical events."

I've said this before.

Some white Americans were abolitionists, and many were enslavers. If learning about America's history of racism makes you feel guilty, then you need to explain why you associate more with enslaver guilt than with abolitionist pride.

Might just be that you're telling on yourself.

@QasimRashid this door swings both...

@QasimRashid I am trying to imagine how my home country - Germany - would try to teach history with these kinds of restrictions.

And isn't it funny that the people who yell 'snowflake' all the time need a law to not get their feelings hurt.

@QasimRashid hello...I did a quick search because I wanted to check the text of the bill, it looks like for the current legislative session HB 7 is restricting abortion access, and the HB 7 suppressing the accurate teaching of history was signed last April?

@jtrobec @QasimRashid Was about to say the same. Googling Florida HB7 gives a different bill: https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/7

Here's a summary of the 2022 one: https://www.flsenate.gov/Committees/BillSummaries/2022/html/2809

@QasimRashid what happens when a black student feels bad because the 400 years of systematic oppression was not explained in class

@chetHendrickson @QasimRashid Oh, the history whitewashers don't care about Black kids or anyone else who's nonwhite. The liars want to make sure the white kids don't become "uncomfortable."

I'd ask, "You know what's uncomfortable? Uncomfortable is seeing Emmett Till's mutilated body in *Jet* magazine and you're all of seven years old."

@QasimRashid
Exactly.
Plenty of good white men in history, plenty of bad, many in between.
If you identify with the bad.....
@QasimRashid what if living in a #Desantis - controlled state makes you feel guilty?
@QasimRashid @Are0h That is an excellent way of putting it. Thank you.
@QasimRashid I'd like to know just who are all these people who are taking history lessons so personally?
@QasimRashid As a history teacher, this is just bonkers.
@QasimRashid the protesters of Ruby Bridges and the Little Rock Nine are still alive - as are Ruby and 8 of the Little Rock Nine themselves. Ppl gonna recognize gramma and grampa in pictures yelling the n* word and throwing rocks AT A 6 YEAR OLD CHILD just wanting to go to school. This is one reason to ban teaching this history - to spare the feelings of still living bigots who would do it all again if given the chance.
@QasimRashid how the hell is a teacher supposed to prove they didn't say/do anything to cause shame?
@QasimRashid This is a solution in search of a problem. The idea that teachers are making students feel bad about their race related to history is absurd, especially for white students. It's just not happening. Republicans are trying gin up outrage among their ignorant and credulous base, who are always on the lookout for white grievance.
@QasimRashid TWW: The moment is vast and your place within it is connected with all people from the time you breathe the same air and drink the same water as the very first. The gifts given to you are the same as those given to everyone, what you do with them is up to you.
*Shake off the dust of your prejudice. There is plenty to celebrate, the hallmarks of music, art, literature and fashion in modern western society are directly related to the African American experience. OWOP
@QasimRashid As with almost all of the DeSantis legislation this will eventually be over turned. The wording is to vague to be constitutionally sound. The question is how much mayhem will it cause while we wait for it to be overturned.
How do I just know that this thinking would never be applied to students of color? @QasimRashid

@QasimRashid

Of course no teacher “makes” students feel one way or another about the past.

But a law like this is an infringement of two freedoms: 1) the freedom to access and weigh knowledge and scholarship without government interference; and 2) the freedom to practice social scientific methodology without government dictating what interpretations of data can or cannot be delivered.

Supporters of this law are choosing government control over free inquiry, free thought, and free speech.

@QasimRashid @video_manager gotta love how the “fuck your feelings” crowd is now legislating not making people feel uncomfortable with facts
@QasimRashid This is one weak little jerk...
@QasimRashid how do they even teach about slavery with that restriction
In my experience, people on the left tend to identify less with their blood relatives and more with their found family. Might this also explain why they are more comfortable discussing uglier parts of their history?

@QasimRashid White people & every human being shouldn't allow conmen like DeSantis to turn them into shameless sociopaths per decree, with disregard for right & wrong, solely for his greediness for power, regardless of their attitudes.

@QasimRashid weak and dishonest politicians use children to cover up their own feelings of guilt.

@QasimRashid Some of my ancestors were slavers. I can find their names in my mom's genealogy records.

What to do with this disgusting reality? I can sweep it under a mental rug & pretend it never happened. I can ignore the facets of today's society that are the spiritual descendants of slavery: systemic racism, bigotry, inequity. I can refuse to teach my daughter her heritage.

Or I can join with my other ancestors, the abolitionists, & carry on their fight. That's what I choose.

@QasimRashid “You’re not allowed to make people feel bad about their race” alongside banning books that exemplify the sacrifices, contributions, and progress made by people of color.

There’s only one race allowed to have pride in the Sunshine-Sundown State.

@QasimRashid if you don’t learn the lessons of the past you can’t apply the lessons to contemporary circumstances. The US can be guilt free when waging war to exploit and oppress weaker nations. They reject evolutionary theory but wholly embrace the twisted notion of social Darwinism.
@QasimRashid
but that's been happening to kids of color since Europeans landed on these shores!
Good grief, what's wrong with a wake up call for the off spring of white settlers who didn't discover this continent, and stole whatever they could.
