Inspired by my last post, I'll do another 3x3 thread. Haven't done this in a while

The thread will be about "underrated" Anime.

I know that some of the listed shows got some attention when they were released. They're included here because I don't see a lot of people talking about them anymore, and I consider it undeserved.
If I misjudged the popularity of any of the shows, you're free to correct me. I'd love to be wrong in this case.

I also excluded the OVAs that are already included in the first thread I ever made. If you're interested in OVAs, you can find it in my pinned toots.

Now the list:

🧵 - 1/9: Bodacious Space Pirates

Imagine Captain Harlock... but everyone is a cute anime girl. Can't be that hard, considering the title of the show

The Anime is based on a Light Novel (I know, nobody is surprised!). It was released in 2012 and contains 26 episodes. In 2014, it was continued with a movie.

The show revolves around Marika and her heritage. She's a high schooler, part of the (space) yacht club, works as maid in a café and... inherits the space ship of her father, who's a space pirate (to her surprise). With her yacht crew and big ambitions, she tries to fill her father's shoes.

🧵 - 2/9: Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens

I watched this show around the first time I watched Baccano and Durarara. I was completely hooked on these shows, and HTR had a very similar vibe.

The Anime was released in 2018. It consists of 12 episodes that conclude the given story very well. You don't need a second season, but I'd have liked another one.

The shows about Hakata, a part of the city of Fukuoka, which is full of crime. We meet parts of the mafia, assassins, detectives, and the (apparently) normal people living in Hakata and learn how all their stories connect. Very Durarara of you!

🧵 - 3/9: Attack No.1

The reason we have sports anime today!! Well, the statement may be a bit ambitious, but I believe it's at least somewhat true!

Attack No. 1 was the first sports anime targeted at a female audience and is based on a Manga that used the volleyball hype in Japan after winning gold in the 1964 Olympics. It has a whooping 104 episodes and was a big deal in my youth.
Attack No.1 was one of the first big Anime that aired in germany, and I bet EVERYONE that is part of my generation can still sing the whole opening from memory.

🧵 - 4/9 Honobono Log

Not only one of the sweetest, but by far my favorite short form Anime.

The Slice-of-Life show doesn't follow a big plot. Instead, we're getting a look into 10 short moments of different relationships. Every episode is only ~2 minutes long, but a lot of them managed to touch me like their 24-minute-long siblings.

There isn't much I can tell you. It's sweet! It's short! The art is super cute! Watch it!

🧵 - 5/9: Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions

Should I really include this show? It was released only a few years ago (2016) by a big studio (A-1 Pictures) and is part of one of the most popular sub-genres right now (Isekai).
I know, I know!! It's still worth praising because it's by far one of the best Isekai released until today. Yes, Slime is amazing, Mushoku is a lot of fun, and other people even enjoy Re:Zero, but no other show is as heartfelt and touching as the melancholic Isekai that is Grimgar. It deserves so much more attention.

Also... the art style is top-notch!!

The plot is also excellent (It's a joke!!):

🧵 - 6/9: Suisei no Gargantia

There can be no list without a Mecha show!

Suisei no Gargantia was released in 2013 by Production I.G. and has 13 episodes.

The Anime takes place in a distant future. Earth is completely flooded, and humanity went into space.
While fighting aliens in space, the main character Ledo landed on earth for the first time with his mech. He gets involved with some locals, living on a big base in the ocean.
The meeting with Amy, a girl living on the base, will change Ledos life forever. The emotionless soldier finally learns to enjoy life.

Also... the OP is a bop!

🧵 - 7/9: Lu Over The Wall

Lu Over The Wall is the only movie on the list. It was released in 2017 and was directed by the exceptional Masaaki Yuasa. Even with such a big director, the movie deserves to be on the list because it's often overshadowed by his other works.

The Anime is a cute experience for the whole family. A coming-of-age movie somewhere between Disney and a fever dream.

The Anime not only features Yuasas creative and unconventional animation style and flow but also an amazing soundtrack by Takatsugu Muramatsu.

🧵 - 8/9: Flying Witch

The perfect Slice-of-Life show doesn't exist? Well, you are wrong because Flying Witch does exist!

The Series by J.C.Staff was released in 2016 and follows the apprentice witch Makoto during her time of self-study, which she's spending living with her relatives in the countryside.
The episodes all revolve around very mundane things... spiced up with some magic.
It feels a lot like a modern take on Kiki's Delivery Service.

🧵 - 9/9: Mirai Keisatsu Urashiman

A show from the 80s that I remember vividly as a highlight of the german afternoon program during the middle of the 90s under the name Rock'n Cop.

The show follows Rico, who is transported into the future with his cat and his VW Beetle.
Rico loses his memory during the time travel (very creative!!) and joins a police special force in the future, always looking for clues about his past.

The main character Rico shares a lot of similarities in his behavior with the (infamous) City Hunter. It's something you have to consider if you watch it

@To
A super-cute series. Really laid-back. One episode has a girl following a cat familiar around town.

@pkemner It really is super cute. My favorite episode is the one introducing the magical café, which is also my favorite location in the show.
@To
The Cafe w ghost server & supernatural customers was great!
@To There’s many lovely moments to pick from but just noticed someone liked this one on one of my Tumblrs tonight. https://www.tumblr.com/anipast/659811813254463488/i-dont-want-it

@To Flying Witch was a nice watch that embraced simple story lines, fleshed them out, and didn’t fall back on being cutesy or comedic. Like on the whole, like Grimgar, one of those oddities I wish we got more of.
@anicasts Damn! Mean Girls, Fullmetal Alchemist and now Flying Witch. A lot of things are happening on October 3rd.
@To great studio. I haven't given this one a watch yet. I think I will soon
@To I generally don't enjoy isekai but recall enjoying this when I watched it. Perhaps a mix of taking itself more seriously, female characters were generally not falling over the male characters, and it wasn't a slam dunk win for them at every turn.
@anicasts I learned to love isekai, but I'm well aware that a lot of the things I read or watch are pretty trashy.
Grimgar is a great exception because it's a very real take on getting isekai'd. I can relate with the characters because I'd do as bad as the main group if I'd be in their situation. You connect with them in a way that won't be possible with Rimuru or Rudeus.
@To Grimgar really deserved more seasons
@To Yep, this was surprisingly good. Not really enough plot or number of episodes to hold people’s attention, but it was just all around very solid in terms characters and world and action and art and animation.
@Ragashingo I'd say the amount of plot and pacing of the show are some of the most positive points. I enjoyed it way more to get deeply involved with the characters and their emotions/struggles compared to other isekai 😁

@To wooooof I really had a hard time getting invested in Bodacious Space Pirates!

I felt disappointed by the bait-and-switch of a vapid slice-of-life, compared to the premise of Bodacious Space Piracy…

My 0.02 but it’s correctly rated and not underrated hahahaha

#anime #animereview

@To Hakata and Grimgar my beloved! Now I want to rewatch them again...I did kinda rewatch Grimgar when I was reading the light novel (to see differences)
I kinda wish there's another season of Grimgar, really love the watercolor backgrounds. Iirc the anime adapted volume 1, which dragged a bit for me (the anime did it better), but it only gets better from there. Not your usual isekai fare.
