Particles from #tires are expected to be the largest source of #microplastics potentially harmful to aquatic life by 2050.

Globally, tires emit ~3 million tonnes of particles annually, and create another 3 million tonnes of particles from road surfaces.

Tyre-makers under pressure as too much rubber hits the road

Tyre-makers are under pressure to almost literally reinvent the wheel as regulators turn their scrutiny to tyre pollution that is set to surge with the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and threatens to undermine those cars' green credentials.

@davidho
I remember hearing scientists, when examining how toxic these particles were to fish, after being washed into rivers, saying they had never seen anything more toxic.
@davidho
A exponentially growing problem as electric driven cars are due to battery weight so much heavier - added the brainless size of modern cars, pickups, trucks with conventional engines where one person of 80 Kg is moved in a vehicle of 2400 Kg (which should be banned)
I use an electric car and both the enormous weight and the high available torque wear the tyres twice as fast as was the case with the conventional one.
@davidho The real solution is to halve the number of cars globally.
Saving Washington's salmon from toxic tire dust

After researchers pinpointed the toxic chemical that is killing coho salmon in freshwater, we got to work, alongside several partners, to protect coho salmon.

@davidho Tire makers “under pressure.” GROAN.
@davidho and EVs aren't a solution to this...
