ICYMI: Instagram's New App Could Be Here By June

Meta's hosting secret meetings with select creators to share details

ICYMI by Lia Haberman

What does this even mean?

The client app will be compatible with Mastodon servers.
Mastodon client apps will be compatible with the P92 server.
The P92 server will send content out to Mastodon servers.
The P92 server will import content from Mastodon servers.

Could be any of these, or some combination or nothing. I wish we'd stop calling things apps that aren't apps.

@paul I’m hoping they won’t go full ActivityPub but use some relay/translate points. The EEE could be devastating to the fediverse.
@paul Yhea, very confusing as of now
@paul Considering Instagram has never wanted client apps they don’t control, seems unlikely there is a client API compatible with Mastodon apps. I assume this is server to server ActivityPub. Anything open would be interesting, though!
@manton I'm open minded, just hope whatever it is, goes both ways. Not just hoovering up federated data.
@paul @manton I guess you weren't there for the XMPP rug pull?
@paul Not 2; that would compromise the core Instagram business model of the engagement-maximising algorithmic casino timeline with unblockable ads.

@paul I'm guessing:

1) obviously not
2) probably not
3) yes
4) yes? (I'm not sure how much of ActivityPub is pull vs push)

@paul the answer is probably whichever option harms the fediverse while benefiting Meta the most.

@paul app - application - program - executable, as opposed to a batch script.

From the people who brought you the misunderstanding of "the cloud."

@paul I on the other hand do not.
@paul what a squandered opportunity twitter will have been if this takes off

@amro @paul With nearly 2.5 billion users already on Instagram I expect this app will very easily overtake the #Birdsite in a very short time. And if it is truly decentralized and also possible for creators to monetize their content I am sure it will be a compelling platform. The #Birdsite does not really offer much to compete.

The old “fish where the fish are” is the wisdom most creators and brands will apply to being active in this new app regardless of the negative reputation that Mark Zuckerberg and Meta has earned.

@paul They mention it’ll be compatible with Mastodon. What?! Did I read that right? Is this some alternative reality I’m living in? 🙊

I still hate and don't trust that company though. Even I they'll attempt to build something decentralized.

@gracjan @paul It will support ActivityPub which is a W3C standard. It should be possible to interact that way. I am not quite sure of the benefits to a company like Meta or how the user experience in apps like Mastodon will be. I use Pixelfed and can follow my account on there and even boost posts with my account on Mastodon.

My guess is Meta will make it harder for content to get into their domain while they will make it easy for their content to get out to any ActivityPub capable service. If their apps are better in terms of design and usability I expect many will use it.

@brennansv @paul I’m aware of #ActivityPub, but I’m also skeptical of #Meta’s willingness to change. They’re the primary actor who got us into this whole mess of #centralization, #surveillance, addiction, hate speech and extremist content, fake news, conspiracy theories, vendor lock-in, etc. I’m afraid that instead of a meaningful paradigm shift which started happening because of the #Fediverse, will end up in a similar situation.
@gracjan @paul Many of these problems will remain on any platform because some people are bad actors.
@brennansv @paul That's true, but Facebook enabled these things on a scale that hasn't been seen before. They also showed, over and over again, through bad decisions and inaction, that they don't care about the huge detriment to society as long as their bottom line is safe. In my opinion, they are the worst tech company (or at least very high on that list).
@gracjan @paul I would focus on what can make Mastodon and what ActivityPub apps can do to be better in every including mitigating abuses. This is the classic problem of building a platform/website/app for one purpose and users using it differently than was intended. Abuse it just a subset of that problem. If we are distracted by what others are doing we won’t have as much energy left to what we want to improve.
@paul why does the ui look horrible i dont expect a lot from meta but holy fuck
@paul I expect there to be some sort of catch to their federation support, but, I guess we’ll find out
@chrnola @paul yhea I can't believe they would make it compatible with mastodon
@thull @paul exactly, I’d be shocked if it was proper bi-directional federation
@paul Did that just say compatible with Mastodon???
@paul as much as I hate to admit it, this will probably become VERY popular. Users will have an already populated timeline and follow list and Gram creators will have an existing base to build connection with. Unless Meta totally botches this, it could be a huge blow to Twitter.
@paul this looks awesome!! Quite excited for this!
@paul Ah yes, a text based Instagram app, I remember when we used to just call it facebook…
