Kids today with their blue hair and pronouns.
Kids today with their baggy pants and rap music.
Kids today with their long hair and heavy metal music.
Kids today with their long hair and hippie music.
Kids today with their leather jackets and rock’n’roll music.
Kids today with their flapper outfits and jazz music.

Same as it ever was? Same as it ever was.

@zombierustpunk there's good money to be made in fearmongering about the moral decay of society
@AmyZenunim yeah, but there’s plenty of folks who will do it for free
@zombierustpunk aw, no plaid shirts and grunge music?

@zombierustpunk It seems like it's no longer fashionable to trash-talk millenials, but every time I read or heard it over the last few years I thought about what they used to say about Gen X.

We were, supposedly, nothing but a bunch of slackers who didn't have any interest in work.

It was sad to see so many people my age fall for the same stupid trick against the next generation.

@trainingmontage what really gets me are the boomer comedians who used to make fun of the Reagan-era “moral majority” for being so uptight, and now they’re on tour selling out stadium shows fretting about how they’re “cancelled” because some 14-year-old called them a bigot on twitter.
@zombierustpunk I've been completely amazed at the old punks who turned out to be moderate or completely reactionary.

@trainingmontage @zombierustpunk And our exams were way too easy, not like the O-levels that our parents did.

And now I hear the same thing about the exams my kids take!

@HollieK72 @trainingmontage @zombierustpunk

As a kid in the 60's, I looked hopefully to the future when the people older than I saw fighting against war, FOR the trees, all those kids who just ten years older than I, going off to Woodstock, I looked to them to change things. But, by the 80's I saw very few of them creating real change---they were chasing money--and by the 2000's when I was in my 40's things were still unchanged.

And now, of course all those I looked up to are in their 70's and 80's and older and what a shit show.

They were the ones who were supposed to change everything.

@Sfwmson @trainingmontage @zombierustpunk Things did change, just not for the better ...

@zombierustpunk I think there are ancient quotes about "kids these days" - and the complaints are always the same, about lack of respect for elders and preferring music and parties to reading and studying.
@roclaverton @zombierustpunk When I was a boy I recall hearing “you can’t tell the girls and the boys apart these days.”

@zombierustpunk In high school I was required to see a school counselor on a regular basis for the offense of wearing a trench coat. They couldn’t prove there was anything wrong with me or my friends but there was always someone watching the spot we hung out at.

@zombierustpunk I like to remember that polka used to be the devil's music, full of dancing and beer. Sometimes it seems the radicals of one generation become the conservatives of the next as they struggle to sustain the aesthetic of their own revolution, if not its values.
@zombierustpunk Yup. we're on a road to nowhere. The strangest thing is that the previous generation were complaining about the following one. Some people are destined to be Middle-Aged before their time.

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."
--Socrates (c. 470 - 399 BCE)

SAME AS IT EVER WAS!

@VisualStuart @zombierustpunk Wait ... is that the same dude as the So-Krates guy from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure? 😎
@zombierustpunk @VisualStuart When will we ever learn? When will we ever learn.

@zombierustpunk Shouldn't piercings and punk music be in there somewhere?

... Kids today, with their failure to be scared of punks.

@zombierustpunk

As Socrates once said:

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

I often find myself with Melanie Safka's tune "Look what they've done to my song, ma" going through my head, substituting 'the world', 'the sky', 'the sea', 'the land', & appropriate corresponding lyrics.
Have a go at it.

@zombierustpunk there is nothing worse than realizing your 'rebel' music is now gently playing while you grocery shop. #old sucks
@zombierustpunk I read a lot of 1920s archives. I stumbled on a moral panic about “petting parties” where mixed gender groups felt each other over the clothes. Moral chaos!

In a wolf pack, the cubs engage in aggressive play. In this way, they determine who will be the alpha.

One day, the alpha cub challenges the alpha wolf. The old man kicks the kid's ass, but he knows the kid will be back.

The alpha cub keeps coming back until he finally defeats the elder. Both the cub and the alpha wolf understand that this is how it is. This is how it should be.

Challenging the status quo is a necessary part of evolution.

@zombierustpunk it's pretty crazy that we are all subject to generational criticism and then do exactly that without stopping to think for one second.

If the explanation is that this generation is different, you'll have to prove to me that all other potential explanations are invalid.

@zombierustpunk kind of a lot more concerned about the kids these days into alt-right memes and gun collecting.

@zombierustpunk

A particular genre of music is not especially associated with it this time.

@zombierustpunk no. gender identity isn't a generational thing.

LETTING THE DAYS GO BY

@zombierustpunk I love how hair is always involved. The baggy pants go with words shaved into their heads, the leather jackets go with greasy duck's butts, the flapper outfits go with short hair, etc. May as well go for the hair if such a big stretch is being made?

@zombierustpunk

coming up on the last iteration though!

@zombierustpunk kids these days with their fancy spears. What’s wrong with a good club?

@zombierustpunk

I once saw a reference to the older generation making fun of a young man for the way he cut his goatee, and wore his toga... Julius Caesar as a young man, before he became a dictator.

This happens in literally all societies in history that aren't in imminent danger of an existential threat. And sometimes, even in ones that are.

@zombierustpunk I actually came a cross an interesting article that stated that youth cultures and subgroup aren't the same any more like they used to. Due to mainly visuell-based social media plattforms, they mainly focus on looks and not values. Would be interesting if someone could do more research about that.
@zombierustpunk never trust anyone under 30 🤔
