Mainstream Media’s Rightward Lurch - Dame Magazine

I’ve seen a number of stories in recent weeks about CNN’s supposed shift to a “less partisan” strategy under new CEO Chris Licht. “CNN to dull its liberal edge,” reads a February 26 headline at Axios, and earlier this month, the New York Times reported that Licht “said he wanted to book more Republicans and

This week let's highlight @gusbova's moving report on the death of a worker from exteeme heat conditions at the #Tesla gigafactory, and how the company tried to hide his death: https://www.texasobserver.org/tesla-texas-worker-death-heat/

We will also share this investigation by Kit @oconnell and @stevanzetti into the big money donor who both funded anti-#trans lawmakers and used his wealth to threaten a children's hospital, with help from a hate group: https://www.texasobserver.org/monty-bennett-acpeds-genecis-transphobia-sb14/

Controlled Burns Help Prevent Wildfires, Experts Say. But Regulations Have Made It Nearly Impossible to Do These Burns.

Even though the 2021 Marshall Fire made it clear that the fire threat posed by Colorado’s grasslands endangers large urban areas, federal, state and local rules continue to make it difficult to address the risk.

@ProPublica

This is really interesting!

It strikes me that, to the extent that the problem is that controlled burns are necessary but can't be done (under environmental regulations that also seem p impt!) when air pollution is already high, there's a solution: Wildfire prevention needs to be coupled with other efforts to limit pollution

That could mean longer-term infrastructural changes (eg limiting traffic) but could also mean, say, polluting industries need to pause during scheduled burns

@ProPublica
It reminds me of the endless debates about how to balance limiting Covid spread in schools with limiting kids' losses (of education and other things) from school closures, which never considered the obvious solution of mitigating the dilemma by reducing spread outside the system (closing bars and gyms, mandating ventilation/filtration in essential industries, and so on). So often that's the real solution to tradeoffs where both sides really matter

Love this story. Appreciate learning how communities subject to natural disasters are facing the many steps needed to stay safe. Across the nation it seems like a land use management problem. Living too close to forests and prairies invites exposure to these and other related natural disasters. Kinda like living next to that favorite river or ocean beach and dealing with floods, storms, and sea level rise. Location, location, location.

For #Newstodon this week we have a story about the Dumagat-Remontado tribe in the Philippines who are fighting the construction of the Kaliwa Dam project, which has faced resistance from civil society groups as well as many of the Dumagat-Remontado, who say they fear it will cause both environmental and cultural damage.

‘It gives life’: Philippine tribe fights to save a sacred river from a dam

DARAITAN, Philippines — Members of the Indigenous Dumagat-Remontado, young and old alike, stood out against the greenery in their traditional red loincloth and tapis. On a scorching Good Friday morning, their brows were knit, their footsteps quiet yet firmly grounded, as they wound through the Tinipak River in the Philippines’ Sierra Madre Mountain Range. @Redshift42 This is all part of the same Dominionist attack.

@TexasObserver @damemagazine @gusbova @ProPublica @mongabay @gbhnews @thexylom @heiseonline For #Newstodon and #AAPIHeritageMonth, we have this fascinating piece of history:

How Hawaii's white plantation owners encouraged Russian immigration at the start of the 20th century to do exploitative farm work -- because native Hawaiians were starting to organize against exploitation, and racist laws barred Chinese #immigration

@histodons

White landowners in Hawaii imported Russian workers in the early 1900s, to dilute the labor power of Asians in the islands

In a territory landowners wanted to become a state, white immigrants were less threatening to American nativists on the mainland.
