It's true that gun violence still happens in countries where guns are very restricted.
Eg. A local man revenge-murdered his kids with a gun. He owned it legally, he followed the rules, was even a member of a club (one of the requirements for recreational or sports shooting in Australia). He took his weapon, killed his kids, then had a standoff with cops before he killed himself.
This all happened within walking distance of my house.
That said, 99.9% of the locals - including those who own guns - would say we have good gun laws here. The local gun club he belonged to said "he seemed weird, but we didn't see how bad it was, we're reviewing our processes so this doesn't happen again".
The point of gun legislation isn't to eliminate gun violence, but to reduce the frequency of incidences, and in restricting gun types and magazine sizes, reduce the deaths to injuries - injuries that people might survive.
No you can't stop the criminals, but you can stop the everyday deaths of people shot down by someone with a grievance or issue whose nearest weapon to hand was a firearm.
I live a street away from a school and never have to fear I'll hear shots and screams, wails and weeping.
By God and gun regulations, I'll take it!
