Who would have thought that a farcical feudal ceremony backed by a fascistic flag-shagging government would lead to the oppression of free speech?
When you lament the totalitarianism of China or Russia, recall the demise of civil liberties in the UK today. #AbolishTheMonarchy
This is not China. This is not Russia. This is London in 2023.
Current state of British democracy, RIP. #AbolishTheMonarchy #NotMyKing
@postfilm abolishing the monarchy won't get my support until I have some confidence in the superiority of any proposed replacement. But I am disgusted and worried by the arrest of peaceful legitimate protestors.
@debenore @postfilm
Why do we need any replacement. We have Prime Ministers and Diplomats
@Christo98 because they don't persist through changes in government
@debenore @postfilm Ireland, Germany and many others manage perfectly well with an elected head of state. No need whatever for feudal anachronisms.
@samueljohnson @postfilm yes some countries have made it work. Others not so much.
@debenore @samueljohnson @postfilm Actually, there's no need for any form of "Head of State": the UK just has to grow up. (So do others, btw).
@peter_lord @debenore @postfilm It is useful, as in Ireland, Germany and others, to have a person with specific responsibilities such as signing legislation into law (or referring to a supreme court for consideration as to constitutionality). In the UK the crown is a rubber stamp which is obliged to prorogue parliament, sign legislation etc, and has only fictional authority.
@samueljohnson @debenore @postfilm You've just made the case for the abolition of the UK monarchy. Now convince 10's of millions of others...
(Based on recent evidence, telling them that it would release £350M per week to spend on the NHS would probably swing it! )
@peter_lord @debenore @postfilm I am not British and am largely indifferent to the desire of many British to live in a heritage theme park riddled with anachronisms like leasehold property tenure, unelected bishops in the legislature, sectarian laws on the statute books, royal exemptions from taxes, hereditary legislators, titles of nobility and all the rest of the feudal nonsense they imagine is "world beating".
@samueljohnson @debenore @postfilm Sadly, some of us have to live with all of that by accident of birth...
@peter_lord @debenore @postfilm It was all imposed by force on my country (Ireland) and eventually removed by force from most of it - - a gerrymandered legacy colony imposed at gunpoint remains and awaits the dustbin of history, like monarchy. Performative loyalty to the crown remains a hallmark of settler colonialism abroad and amnesia and ignorance in Britain.
@debenore
Replacement in what capacity exactly? Whilst democracy appears to be the least worst system we have, we do already have it and there is no part of it that *requires* the monarchy. Or do you refer to tourism?
@postfilm @peter_lord

@postfilm

Neither funny nor exageration.

@postfilm Every major network this morning in NYC is carrying live coverage of the coronation (CBS,NBC,FOX,ABC). It is inescapable. I would, quite frankly, prefer my normal Saturday morning news scape.
Is it like this elsewhere in the world when the US swears in its president?

@postfilm

Tankies have taken over the government of the island that spawned that term.

@postfilm You are wake up very lately, really. Where you was before? Or it wasnt a monarchy with Queen Elizabeth?

@postfilm
Read the news.
When "protesting" includes the throwing of rape alarms at the horses, with the intent of spooking them and possibly injuring military members or the general public, then those protesters SHOULD be arrested.

Did you miss that part?

"intelligence indicated groups and individuals were planning to use and throw rape alarms in order to disrupt the coronation procession."
"There was concern that this would scare horses involved in the procession"

Police accused of ‘alarming’ attack on protest rights after anti-monarchist leader arrested

Graham Smith, head of Republic, among those detained on coronation route with environmentalists and women’s safety campaigners also held

The Guardian
@jimgoodall the article doesn't link the three arrested in Soho with the demonstrators who were later arrested unloading placards.
@jimgoodall dodgy police intelligence? Met removed their tweet about this, after it had been widely reported. Very effective propaganda?
