I’m trying hard to bite my tongue reading these suggestions about defederating mastodon.social over crypto spammers. Sure, let’s destroy ourselves and let the spammers win. 🙄
@andrewbriscoe Exactly - why such a knee-jerk reaction to a situation that was handled pretty well from what I can tell. Let’s call it a stress-test, let’s hope people learned
@andrewbriscoe It did feel like the whole thing was handled quickly. I didn’t see any of the people calling for defederation, so I didn’t realize it was a thing until a few masto admins I follow said they weren’t going to do that.
@clovertalk I saw a couple people talking about it. Last week they were calling for defederation because the Mastodon app now defaults signups to mastodon.social.

@andrewbriscoe I guess there will be a section of people who immediately say defederate when something they don’t like happens. Based on what I have seen so far in my feed, I have essentially done a great job of following some very level headed people.

I think signing up for an account on mastodon.social initially makes sense. Then over time, as you get used to how Mastodon works, move to an instance that you truly connect with and start supporting it financially if you can.

@clovertalk I agree, it should be easy to sign up, easy to switch. I hope they eventually make posts and signup date portable. Ideally, I would like to be on something like mountains.social but I’m not willing to lose my posts and my 2018 signup date. I’m trying to ignore the negativity.
@clovertalk I recognize the signup date thing is silly. I saw someone with “mastodon.social: 2018-2022” in their bio after moving.
@andrewbriscoe I will admit that, when I realized I had this account from 2018, I redirected the one I created on infosec.exchange this year. Still figuring out what I want to do.
I think the more people that host their own instance the stronger the fediverse becomes. Then people could block (or defederate) without affecting huge portions of the fediverse. Ideally, someone would design a clever package like a raspberry pi preinstalled and ready to connect. That would be cool.
@DrCassone I do think it would be cool. Even though I have the technical skills to do it I really don’t want to deal with that. I want to be hiking! 😁

@andrewbriscoe unintended consequences of default signups to mastodon.social. Hopefully a learning and growing moment.

I like it here on Mastodon. It’s better for my mental health.

@omnedon Fair. The spammers will just a different instance next.
