Any reason to not scrub and recycle all my <= 2TB 3.5" SATA spinners? I generally keep old hardware forever but just can't imagine me ever using any of those again.
Ended up with this pile of drive e-waste. Hope Best Buy still has a drop off.
@paul had to pay a service to take mine last time — granted, it included a 36” CRT TV and there was no way i was dragging that somewhere
@paul If they aren’t broken, why not just give them away?
@frumble @paul are they mil-spec securely erased?
@ijk64 @paul Mil-spec erasure is bonkers; one overwrite is enough.
@frumble @paul ha-ha yeah - we once had someone try doing that on a production SAN, grinding everything to a halt (backplanes saturated) and took out 3 government dept SAP systems for a few hours until they worked it out.
@frumble what am I going to do stand on the street corner and hand them out? 🤪
@paul Isn’t Craigslist the give-away market in the US? ^^
@frumble I've read enough /r/choosingbeggars stories that I'll never do that.
@paul i know at best buy there is a box of used electronics that are going to be thrown out, i usually steal alot of that box
@fluffery I didn't know it was a take one leave one box.
@paul its not supposed to be
@fluffery what kind of stuff did you get?
@paul ssd and hdds, my old phone, a pi, laptop and a few other things
i also go there as a way to save money, not picky with what i get, i usually clean it up and fix it, way cheaper than brand new

@paul I personally disassemble them and end up with some great permanent magnets, some aluminum that I can turn in for cash, and a few electrical bits that I can drop off to get recycled.

it's a bit of work, but the magnets alone make it worth it.

@paul I'll pay for shipping to get them, looking to build a NAS for home.

@paul they might dunk on you

I’ve dropped off laptops and had them make fun of me for how old they are

Still, better than other alternatives

@paul I think it’s 3 items per day per household. Please let us know if that is accurate or not!
@paul your city will likely have a drive through drop off point for e-waste. Give google a try. Many are only on weekends, at least in Los Angeles.
@paul apparently they don’t accept printers with toner in them. They made me remove the toner today.
