I'm @marcoarment on Bluesky if you're over there.

I don't know if it'll stick yet, but the crowd there is VERY different so far from what I've found here — much smaller, of course, but also much more diverse. It's refreshing.

@marcoarment I’m waiting for an access code
@montymo @marcoarment also waiting - but watching with bemusement at some of the shit show going on…
@marcoarment I’m hoping they open it up soon. Invites are hard to come by.
@marcoarment are you not concerned that it's essentially just Twitter all over again? Seems like we're jumping the gun on Mastodon not fulfilling our expectations. Yes, this platform has been for over 5 years, but it does not seem like it is not allowed to mature and must be a clone of Twitter. I don't want Twitter all over again. Bluesky seems like just placing a label over top of Twitter from a few years ago. (I said seems because I do not have an account there.)
@markgdavis @marcoarment exactly. Just another corporate social network that will end up sellung user data and litter users with vomit inducing amounts of ads.
@marcoarment I’m extremely interested to check it out, but it seems almost impossible to get an invite code. I wish they would open it up a bit more.
@marcoarment any invites to share by chance?
@marcoarment Real question: What's wrong with the people here?
I mean diversity wise.
I'm starting to feel this place growing and growing at a nice pace, so it's not as empty as it used to be.
@enthraxxx @marcoarment Let me translate: It's lots of dudes. Lots of nerds. Lots of nerdy dudes.

@phongg @marcoarment I mean, we're both following a superstar developer who shared his SQL wrapper a few days ago. Yeah, we're nerds 😇

As for being dudes, we're both choosing cartoon characters as our public faces (no idea if Perry Bible stated if yours is male or female 😉)

@enthraxxx @marcoarment Oh I'm DEFinitely a nerdy dude. While I'm fine with it like this as a small haven for just us, I do miss the people that aren't here. Ultimately, the platform doesn't matter. The most important thing are where the people go, and at this moment that's still up in the air.

I'm sure what's drawing the varied crowd to Bluesky is both the simpler sign ups and FOMO from invites. Glad to see Mastodon is moving in the right direction with the new sign ups at least.

@enthraxxx
Not sure about Marco’s circles but for me, who’s from South East Asia, as most SEA folks are still on Twitter, the small group people who self-select to join the Fediverse tend to have a strong anarchist/anti-capitalist/open-source software streak - which i all sympathize with, but Twitter & Bluesky are definitely more *ideologically* diverse (though the right wingers are not on Bluesky yet).
@marcoarment

@enthraxxx
On the other hand, I see far more south East Asians/people from various countries on Mastodon for now & Bluesky feels very Western (though there’s sizable Japanese and Persian communities up there already). Things will likely change there as SEA folks of various ideological leanings start trying out Bluesky once the floodgates are open.

@marcoarment

@enthraxxx
So far I’m mostly sticking to Mastodon as here’s where I’ve found many interesting people (versus Bluesky which is mainly twitter bigwigs), but I’m keeping an eye on the other side as well for sure.
@marcoarment
@marcoarment I’m still quite skeptical of Bluesky… I feel like Mastodon (and ActivityPub) could become much better with some more work. I’m worried that Bluesky will suck the air out of the room, then turn into bad-Twitter again. I’d really love to hear you chat about your Bluesky thoughts on ATP.
@marcoarment The diversity angle is what concerns me about Mastodon. But I'd rather stay here and work on that, than hand over everything I do to another private company again. We know how that goes.
@marcoarment Glad to see this. See you there!
@marcoarment I think you will like it.
There is some weirdness, but it's mostly fun.
@marcoarment I thought those adjectives were exaclty what was and is said about mastodon. Has something changed in the last couple of months? Also, is this the beginning of the end of mastodon?
@marcoarment it's amazing how fast mastodon went from "yay it's only us! This very specific type of nerd" to "oh no, it's only us, a very specific type of nerd"
@marcoarment “… and if you’re into Bluesky, you can follow them.” 🎶
@marcoarment this is a much better take than the “im muting all mentions of bluesky” I see on here
@marcoarment Got an invite going spare?
@marcoarment I genuinely find this an interesting comment. I’m #blind, but other blind people have unfollowed you here because you often don’t use Alt text on your images, which is basically putting up a “blind people not welcome” sign, not to mention not good Mastodon etiquette.
Of course, at least at this stage, there’s no rich ecosystem of third-party apps on BlueSky, so not many blind people will bother with it for now.
Content discovery is still an issue here and I’m pleased to see that’s been actively addressed, but it would take a lot for me to give some of the same people that created this mess in the first place a license to use my content.
In the meantime, if diversity interests you, and presumably diversity includes #accessibility, I’d encourage you to be welcoming of it in the way you post.
And even reply to the occasional blind person once in a while. Social networking work best when it’s two-way.
@JonathanMosen Thanks for the feedback. I think I've been pretty good about using alt-text on my images, though.

Just received the following from a friend on WhatsApp regarding Blue Sky: Snagged a bluesky invite to check it out. It is useable, but none of the controls have valid roles. You can tell what most everything does but it is all clickable text. Things like reposts/likes/whatevers aren't labeled as such, they just show the numbers. So it's pretty confusing. Also I didn't see much alt text over there but I only looked for a few seconds. The crowd is very influencer-heavy (politicians, journalists, celebrities etc) so if that's your bag it might be worth following. I'm not gonna, though. And there you have it, blindkind. That's the latest I know on Blue Sky.

The Dragon's Cave
@marcoarment I just got to Mastodon. Nothing can be smaller at the moment.
@marcoarment @marcoarment micro blogging was like music. You can have all the songs in one app. Now it’s like TV. You need to jump between several apps to follow everyone. It’s sad.

@marcoarment Hopefully you will continue post your bs experiences here as well as any Overcast related material.

Was pleased to find you here and not likely to see you over there for a long time.

@marcoarment Whoever emerges as ‘winner’, I’m happy to see the increased fluidity/messiness in the social media landscape. Imho, these massive, central networks are a c*ncer for healthy discourse. Maybe the good ol’ forums got more right than what followed after?
